Hawaii International Jazz Festival

Ukuleles, hulas and ALL THAT JAZZ during the Hawaii International Jazz festival

By Madelyn Miller

The 2003 Hawaii International Jazz Festival marks its 10th anniversary this year with events on Oahu and Maui. And the lineup of artists and events sounds better than ever.

The Maui portion of the festival includes evening concerts and jam sessions, and jazz education seminars featuring local and guest artists from the Mainland is seminars scheduled for July 25 and 26, 2003, at the Wailea Marriott.

This year’s roster of jazz artists includes guitar legend Larry Coryell, trumpet virtuoso Tiger Okoshi, and Big Bands from USC and San Diego State Universities. Also, many local greats, such as Gabe Baltazar formerly of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, will be presented. Specially themed Hawaiian jazz will feature Gypsy Pacific, Ukulele Madness and other indigenous Hawaiian sounds, set to a jazz feel. Educational seminars will feature the above-mentioned artists as well. The festival also raises funds for scholarships. All Maui events are scheduled to take place at the Wailea Marriott.

The Hawaii International Jazz Festival originally introduced its Maui events at the Wailea Marriott under the property’s previous name, Outrigger Wailea Resort. The deluxe oceanfront hotel was subsequently re-branded as the Wailea Marriott, An Outrigger Resort, on January 1, 2003, after Honolulu-based Outrigger Enterprises entered into a franchise agreement with Marriott International. Centrally located in Wailea Resort, the property continues to be managed by Outrigger Hotels & Resorts.

“We’re extraordinarily pleased to continue hosting the Hawaii International Jazz Festival’s events on Maui, first as the Outrigger Wailea Resort and now as the Wailea Marriott,” said Dorsey Brady, vice president and general manager of the Wailea Marriott. “It’s an exceptional event with incredible talent and world-class performances. It’s our hope that the guests who attended it last year will come again this year to enjoy not only the music, but our Hawaiian hospitality as well.”

Ticket prices are $30 and $45 for the Maui concerts, depending upon the seat category. Each ticket also includes one complimentary beverage. For more information about the Hawaii International Jazz Festival or where to obtain tickets, visit www.hawaiijazz.com or call 808-941-9974.
