Euphoria 2010

Euphoria stimulates all the senses.

by Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady

I have been to international music and jazz festivals. I loved the bilingual jazz festival in Montreal. I went to a music festival in Finland. Last year I enjoyed the Park City music festival in a spectacular setting. I have been to most of the “top” food and wine festivals. In fact, I was at the first year of the Telluride Food and Wine Festival and the original South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

You could say, I am on the circuit.  And no one combines all the flavors and sounds and experiences as well as Euphoria in Greenville, South Carolina.

Part of the magic is the destination itself. Greenville, South Carolina, is a sophisticated town with multiple international corporate headquarters.  It is a city that combines the cultural and culinary advantages of a big city with all the charm of a small town.

I met several people who had visited once and decided they want to move there. It was almost like the residents had been hand-picked, or applied for citizenship. And they know how lucky they are. I hated to leave Greenville because it had fabulous food, sensual spas, marvelous museums, and a thriving arts community.

Bigger and Better than Ever

From Thomas Keller to Frank Stitt, Branford Marsalis to Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, the first few years of Euphoria have been filled with big names, big sounds and big flavors – all hosted in the intimate, small-town setting of one of the South’s most celebrated downtowns. Greenville’s fifth year of Euphoria promises to be just as exciting. This year’s dates are September 23-26.

An appreciation of wine does not have to be an expensive talent to obtain and cultivate. You can learn this and more by attending Euphoria’s Wine Seminars hosted by some of the premier Master Sommeliers in the country. Euphoria will also be pouring more than 100 wines at the tasting showcase, just the ticket for refining your palate and widening you knowledge of the grape.

 2010 Wine  (scheduled to appear)

Wayne Belding

Member of the Court of Master Sommeliers since 1990; Prestigious Krug Cup winner; Owner of “The Wine Merchant” in Boulder, CO

Wayne Belding grew up in the mid-Hudson Valley of upstate New York, now, ironically, a burgeoning wine-producing area. After earning a degree in geology from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1972, he moved to Colorado and ultimately found his way into the oil fields of the U.S. as a geologist. Along the way, he became fascinated with wine, and when the energy boom went bust in 1982, used that opportunity to transform his avocation into his vocation.

He began at The Boulder Wine Merchant, a wine specialty shop in Boulder, Colorado. He then became Sommelier at the Heritage Hotel in Denver which, at the time, had a Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine cellar. During his tenure at the Heritage, he competed in The 2nd Annual French wine and Spirits Sommelier Competition in America, sponsored by Food and Wines from France, in 1985. He won the Denver Regional Competition and placed seventh in the final competition in New York. The examination experience was stimulating and, when the Court of Master Sommeliers first came to the U.S. in 1987 and the opportunity was presented, he began his pursuit of the Master Sommelier diploma. After passing the basic Certificate course and Advanced Sommelier course, he became the 13th American to pass the demanding Master Sommelier examination at Monterey, California in 1990. In addition to passing the rigorous examination, he also earned the Krug Cup - an award bestowed by Krug Champagne on the person who passes all three parts of the Master Sommelier test at the same examination and attains the highest score of those tested. To the present, only 75 Americans have passed the Master Sommelier examination. He has served as Education Chairman and Chairman for the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Throughout his years in the wine business, Mr. Belding has been an educator as well. He has taught wine appreciation classes for over twenty years, instructing well over 1000 students in that time. He has been a wine competition judge at the National Restaurant Association Wine Classic in Chicago, The Jefferson Cup, the Colorado State Fair and the California Wine Celebration in Denver. He has also been a featured speaker at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, The Telluride Wine Festival, The Taste of Vail and the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival in Winter Park, Colorado. He has taught professional wine service classes throughout the country and since 1986, he has been an owner of The Boulder Wine Merchant.

Laura Williamson

Member of the Court of Master Sommeliers since 2003; Certified Wine Educator; Co-owner of “Vin Tabla”, Tuscon, AZ

Laura Williamson began her formidable career in the service industry at the young age of 18.  She grew up in a dry county in Arkansas (her parents still reside there!) and only began to discover the virtues of wine once she moved to Paris, France at the age of 19 for her first two years of college.  After exploring wine through service positions at David Paul’s in Lahaina, Maui, Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, John’s Restaurant and Flagstaff House in Boulder, Colorado and Sweet Basil and Wildflower in Vail, Colorado, she was convinced that her talents with wine could lead to a more exciting and fulfilling career than her opportunities with her Financial Planning and Economics degree.

She was encouraged to pursue the Master Sommelier accreditation by her mentors Wayne Belding and Sally Mohr of the Boulder Wine Merchant and achieved this coveted distinction of which only 78 Americans (including just 13 women) had attained prior to her success in 2005.  She is currently an active member of the Court of Master Sommeliers, the grading body for aspiring candidates. She also holds the prestigious title of Certified Wine Educator and achieved this feat in 2002 when only approximately 100 others had previously.

Following her accreditation, she began consulting for Small Vineyards Imports, the fastest growing Italian Wine importer in the US for 2006 and 2007 and the only Italian importer to focus exclusively on small-production and hand-harvested fruit with minimal environmental impact.  She assists in selecting the portfolio and educating nationally the supplier and distributor staffs on the superior virtues of small, earth-friendly wine production.

She is also a co-owner of VinTabla Restaurant and Wine Shop in Tucson, AZ and simultaneously runs the beverage program for VinTabla as well as doubling as a sommelier for her restaurant.  Her wine list proudly showcases over 100 wines from around the world by a ‘taste’ and ‘glass’ pour to enhance the synergy of food and wine pairings with acclaimed Chef Bruce Yim’s diverse New American cuisine.  She never tires of customizing flights personally for VinTabla diners and enjoys creating this rare opportunity and experience for her coveted guests.

She can also be found at her newly opened sister restaurant, Dove Mountain Grill, located just outside of Tucson in Marana, AZ.

She lectures nationally to businesses, restaurants and private clients about the wine regions of the world, the techniques involved with pairing food and wine and the art and skill surrounding wine collecting.  She also speaks annually at national wine conferences and festivals and is a staunch advocate for artisan wine producers.  She passionately travels the globe in search of unknown, exotic wines from eclectic indigenous grapes just to share these rarities with others.

In her spare time, practicing Anusara Yoga and leading yoga and wine workshops takes priority in her life along with supporting local children’s charities.

Brian Cronin

Master Sommelier since 2005, Spire Collection; San Francisco, CA

Big Sounds

Music has the ability to trigger emotions; to ease tensions; to elicit camaraderie; and, when in the hands of a true artist, to inspire greatness. Music has always been a pillar of the Euphoria experience, not an afterthought. Euphoria 2010 continues that tradition with performances by Edwin McCain and several other renowned artists soon to be announced.

They say that the mark of a good musil is that when you leave the show, you keep humming the songs. That you almost flashback to the musical numbers at times when you are not even thinking about it. They become a part of your internal hard drive—sounds and songs that you can recall at will.

Shakespeare must have tasted a bit of Euphoria back in his day when he wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on."

New to the line up this year, an intimate “behind the music” event featuring Edwin McCain and some songwriter friends talking about the music making process and singing the results. The performance takes place “in the round” inside the new Children’s Museum of the Upstate.

Thursday, September 23

Songwriters in the Round presented by Verizon Wireless
7:00pm – 10:30pm

2010 Musical

Edwin McCain - Platinum-selling singer/songwriter, Greenville native and co-founder of Euphoria

Edwin McCain

Edwin McCain is happy. Life's been good to him and he is very much obliged. Millions of albums sold. Hit songs that never leave the radio airwaves. An unwavering fanbase that keeps him on tour more days out of the year than not. And--surprising even Edwin himself--not one, but two of the most enduring wedding songs on the circuit, his earnest and soulful delivery unlikely standouts amongst all the other contrived wedding fare. So when it came to recording a new album, Edwin wanted to share the songs he loves and that make him happy, hoping listeners will take a few moments along the way to discover, rediscover and savor some of the best vintage soul and R&B songs ever written.

So why would McCain--someone who has considerable talent at writing his own songs--choose to do an album of other peoples' work? "For me, it was an absolute blast," he says. "It was so much fun taking a break from staring into my own bellybutton, playing, singing, interpreting other people's songs just for the fun of it. Purely for the joy of doing it."

The idea for Nobody's Fault But Mine had been simmering for quite some time. "I had a conversation with my friend Kevn Kinney (of Drivin' n' Cryin') about five or six years ago, who said 'you need to get a smoking band together and make a soul music album like James Brown,' and I loved it." Then last year, out of the blue, Edwin was invited by producer Tor Hyams (Joan Osborne, Tricky) to do just that. After culling through hundreds of songs, Edwin and his team came up with the 15 tracks for Nobody's Fault But Mine. They enlisted Steve Cropper, one of the architects of the Stax sound and a founding member of Booker T. & the MG's, as well as Joan Osborne ("I've Got Dreams To Remember") and Ivan Neville to join Larry Chaney (guitar), Manolo Yanes (bass), Eddie Bayers (drums), Doug Moffet and Craig Shields (saxophones), Quentin Ware (trumpet), Steve Pierson (acoustic guitar on "Good Times") and C.C. White and Chasen Hampton (background vocals) in the studio.

The band approached the sessions much like the originals, recording the tracks largely live in just one or two takes. "When we got to the studio, we were ripping through, recording a lot of songs in a short period of time." A particular favorite was "T.C.B. or T.Y.A." "It was one of my discoveries when searching for songs for the album, a real gift," Edwin explains. "And the version we ended up with is amazing." Exhilarating "Can I Get A Witness" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" were added alongside songs like the funk laden "Grits Ain't Groceries (All Around The World)" and deliciously dirty "Ninety-Nine and a Half." There's even a "Happy Song," resplendent in Stax-worthy horns.

"Some of the most fun in making the album was returning to the era and mindset of the songs," Edwin recalls, "really understanding the beauty of it all, just the absolute and total brilliance of the music and capturing the spirit of it." Upon listening to McCain's deep, expressive vocals belting out the rhythm and blues, it's clear that he and the songs are kindred spirits, finally finding each other and embracing in the reunion.

While radio fans may know McCain best for his smash hits "I'll Be," "I Could Not Ask For More" and "Solitude," the singer/songwriter paid his dues in full by touring relentlessly early in his career. After releasing seven albums and selling over 2 million copies, he continues to perform hundreds concerts throughout the country each year.

"The album's not meant to be heavy or overly contemplative," sums up Edwin. "With everything that seems to be going on in the world, it's nice to smile once in a while."

Chuck Cannon

Country music songwriter, Academy of Country Music winner

Chuck grew up in the low country of South Carolina, a Southern boy generations deep. His music echoes the R&B, Folk Rock, Gospel, and Country he grew up listening to.

He is a multi-award winning songwriter who has had his songs recorded by an incredibly diverse array of mega-stars ranging from Paul Carrack (Mike & The Mechanics, Squeeze and Ace) to Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Toby Keith…to Euro-Pop super-group BoyZone and 80’s rock superstar band NightRanger.

With numerous # 1 and top ten songs, he has logged over 16 million airplays with BMI.

His critically acclaimed solo projects, GOD SHAPED HOLE and LOVE AND MONEY reflect the depth of his art…the production is haunting with wide open spaces that support songs that are quite simply, stunning.

His live performance is riveting…no one interprets a song like the writer of the song and Chuck Cannon will leave you wanting more.

Maia Sharp

Country singer/songwriter, acclaimed collaborative musician

Being the child of country songwriter Randy Sharp (he's written hits for Clay Walker, Patty Loveless, and others) and growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the '70s had to have given Maia Sharp a leg up on her way to a musical career.

By age 12, Sharp was playing around on the piano, saxophone, oboe, and guitar. Fast forward to her early twenties, and she could be found on-stage at one of L.A.'s many acoustic venues performing her own jazz/folk songs to an engaged crowd of fans. When not on-stage, Sharp could surely be found collaborating with artists such as Carole King, Jules Shear, Lisa Loeb, and Jonatha Brooke.

It was Sharp's songwriting that won the attention of manager Miles Copeland, who signed her to his new Ark 21 label and released her debut album, Hardly Glamour, in 1997. That year, Sharp was nominated for Triple-A radio's Artist of the Year. She also shared the stage with Bruce Cockburn, Vonda Shepard, and David Wilcox, among others.

As a songwriter, Sharp has had tunes recorded by Cher, Kim Richey, Amanda Marshall, and Paul Carrack. Hardly Glamour's "Parting Request" was also included on the soundtrack for The Mighty. In 1998, Sharp recorded her follow-up album, Tinderbox, and released it independently after parting ways with her label. The new millennium saw her teaming with Art Garfunkel and Buddy Mondlock, and getting a track on the highly acclaimed debut from Shivaree. Spring 2002 brought her back to the forefront with a second album. She hit the road with Keb Mo and Jonny Lang and issued her self-titled debut for Concord. Her 2005 album, Fine Upstanding Citizen, was released by Koch and 2009’s Echo, released by Crooked Crown, is, according to Sharp, her most personal album to date.

Mark Rapp

Jazz trumpeter and composer, Didgeridoo artist

Jazz trumpeter and composer Mark Rapp has played sold out shows at the Blue Note (NY), Joe's Pub, Yoshi's (San Francisco), Dizzy's at Jazz Lincoln Center and such venues as the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, JazzTime Festival (Croatia), Jazzland (Vienna), W.C. Handy Festival, Sonoma Wine & Song, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage and more.

Mark was named a "top emerging trumpeter" by Downbeat Magazine, featured on a Travel Channel documentary and has played with artists from Branford Marsalis to Hootie and the Blowfish and most recently recorded with Don Braden and Gerald Clayton. His debut CD Token Tales is receiving critical acclaim and charted #20 on the Jazz Week Charts. In 2007 Down Beat listed Rapp on their very short list of, “Top emerging jazz trumpeters.”  JazzTimes and AllAboutJazz.com also had great praises, writing, “(Rapp) has his own way of defining jazz, which keeps its standard principles… while delving into the experimental side.” and "Rapp lives up to his billing as one of today's exciting young trumpeters."

Shawn Colvin

Grammy winning singer/songwriter, Contemporary Folk artist

In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy, and a searing sense of humor. In the 19 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three Grammy Awards, released eight albums, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures, and created a remarkable cannon of work.

Combined sales of her albums total more than 2.5 million copies in the United States alone, and Colvin continues to perform at least 50–60 shows a year. Over the years she has shared the stage and toured with legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, and Lyle Lovett. She has toured internationally throughout her career, returning to places as near as the UK and Europe as far as Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. She was honored to perform with David Broza and Jackson Browne in a very special sunrise concert at the base of the 2000-year-old fortress of Masada in Southern Israel, overlooking Dead Sea. The concert was broadcast on PBS stations throughout the U.S. in the late fall of 2007 and in early 2008.

Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she lived until she was eight. A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale, Illinois, drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970s Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin, Texas—the city she now calls home. Moving to New York at the decade’s end she remained in the country music field as a member of the Buddy Miller Band until she met producer, guitarist, and co-writer John Leventhal. Leventhal inspired Colvin to find her own voice as a songwriter. She began honing her skill, and was soon signed to Columbia records Her first album, Steady On won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

Colvin continued to win fans and critics with her subsequent releases, Fat City (1992) and Cover Girl (1994). In 1996, she released A Few Small Repairs (1996), which would prove to be her breakthrough. The murder-ballad “Sunny Came Home” gave Colvin a Top 10 hit and two of Grammy’s biggest honors: Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Holiday Songs And Lullabies (1998), recorded while Colvin was eight and a half months pregnant with her daughter Caledonia, followed. Whole New You (2001) and Polaroids (2004). Her Nonesuch debut These Four Walls (2006) was lauded by People Magazine as “the most self-assured album of her career” and “one for the ages” by the Washington Post. The Austin-American Statesman called it “an exquisite portrait of strength and vulnerability.”

Colvin’s newest release, Shawn Colvin Live (2009), was recorded in 2008 during a special three-night solo engagement at San Francisco’s famous jazz club, Yoshi’s, Live includes 12 songs written or co-written by Colvin, as well as covers of songs by Robbie Robertson, Gnarls Barkley, and the Talking Heads. The record was co-produced by Colvin and John Leventhal. Shawn Colvin Live captures the beauty and intimacy of Colvin’s performances, showcasing her inimitable voice and matchless guitar stylings.

Colvin recently signed a deal with Harper Collins Publishers to write a memoir, which will be an extension of the intimate, personal, and often hilarious stories that she weaves into her live concerts.

Walter Blanding

Saxophonist, member of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra

One of the wonderful parts of the Euphoria small town/big experience was getting to meet and mingle with the musicians like Edwin McCain. He was the first Grammy award winner I have ever met. I don’t mean he just signs autographs backstage—he is around all weekend and amazingly available. He is like the host of a wonderful party where you are instantly his friend just for attending.

Happy Ending

The Jazz brunch is a well-orchestrated culinary event where you get one last taste of Greenville’s Southern hospitality and a chance to say goodbye to your new and old friends.

My most cherished memories

Two of my favorite experiences are being repeated this year. Kent Rathbun is my hometown favorite chef. I have enjoyed his cooking for thirty years and followed his career. When I was in Atlanta a few years ago, I got to try his brother Kevin’s food.

Not only are they a great culinary combination, but if they weren’t chefs, they could make it on the comedy circuit. They were so funny that they could do a reality show called something like “Cooking with Comedy”

I am a sweetaholic. I have been lucky to get to judge chocolate festivals in Kona and study under a master Lindt Chocolatier in Switzerland. A high point of Euphoria for me was watching handsome David Guas get women orgasmic over his rich Southern cooking. And the fantasy can continue if you buy his award winning cookbook Damn Good Sweets
