Elvis Fans Take Care of Business

By Cynthia Cooper

If it's August, it must be Elvis Week--and this year is no exception! From August 9-17, Presley fans from all over the world will converge in Memphis to celebrate the King's life (and mourn his death) in a variety of ways.

Plenty of live music is scheduled, of course, as is an Elvis fashion show, an "Aloha From Hawaii" luau, and even a "Dead Elvis" ball. Feel like sitting back? Enjoy some of the world's best Elvis impersonators, sit in with Elvis's reunited Mafia men, and sample some of the King's favorite foods. For $25, you can attend Elvis: Leather and Leis, a commemoration of Presley's TV specials. Fans play an important part in the festivities, too--among the fan-centric events are Fan Appreciation Day, a forum dedicated to Elvis-talk, and an Elvis memory-sharing charity event. A detailed events calendar is available here.

If this isn't enough for you, Graceland, Elvis's legendary mansion, will be open for tours. Should the lines be too long, you can always visit Mobile Graceland, a portable exhibit that opened last year. Featuring some of Elvis's favorite costumes, guitars, and other memorabilia, Mobile Graceland went on a 30-city tour earlier this year, spreading Elvis-mania nationwide.

Whether you prefer to mourn with others at the candlelight vigil or try out for the lighthearted Elvis & Priscilla lookalike contest, there's something for everyone. If you've never been to Graceland, now is a great time to go; if you're already an Elvis devotee, Elvis Week is a must!
