Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Jon Secada to Star in New Production
Multi-talented
recording and performing star Jon Secada has been cast in the starring role
of Joseph in the dazzling new production of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals at the Music Hall
at Fair Park Aug. 31-Sept. 12. This biblical joyride was the first musical
by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and the diverse and exhilarating score
combines elements of pop, country, calypso and rock. The musical is
suitable for audiences of all ages.
Taken from the last 13 chapters of the Book of Genesis
in the Bible, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat tells the story
of Joseph’s rise to power. Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, is given a “coat
of many colors” by his father, which infuriates his 11 brothers, who already
resent him for being favored. They don’t understand him because Joseph is a
dreamer and he’s different from them. When he sees in a dream that his
family will bow down to him, it’s the last straw, and his brothers sell him
into slavery in Egypt. There his gift of dream interpretation comes to the
attention of the Pharaoh when he successfully predicts seven years of
bountiful harvests followed by seven years of famine and saves the people
from starvation. Away for many years, he eventually returns home and
reconciles with his family.
Jon Secada immigrated to the U.S. at the age of nine in
1971, settling in Miami where his parents opened a coffee shop. His immense
love of music led him to earn both a B.A. and M.A. in jazz vocal performance
at the University of Miami. He became acquainted with Gloria Estefan, and
they began a successful musical collaboration. He co-wrote six songs on her
multi-platinum 1991 album Into the Light, among them the number one hit
"Coming out of the Dark," and sang backup vocals on her subsequent tour.
In 1992, he launched his own career with a self-titled
debut record, and went on to become one of the biggest adult contemporary
artists of the '90s. Today, he is a Latin and American pop idol who has sold
more than 20 million albums worldwide.
His smooth mix of R&B, pop, and Latin music appeals to
a wide range of audiences. As well as becoming a huge English-language pop
star, he is one of the hottest Latin artists; Otro Día Más Sin Verte was
Billboard's number one Latin album in 1992 and won a Grammy for Best Latin
Pop Album. His second English-language album, Heart, Soul & A Voice (1994),
sold over a million copies. Amor (1995), his second Spanish-language album,
won him another Grammy. Secada (1997) was also well received. Next he
collaborated on songs with Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez. In July of
2000, Epic released the elegant Better Part of Me.
In late 2002, Jon released Amanecer (Awakening), his
first album entirely in Spanish in seven years and his first on Emilio
Estefan's Crescent Moon Records label. A landmark album, it includes
historic duets with diva Gloria Estefan and legendary singer Fernando
Villalona, and showcases his range and versatility. “Making Amanecer was
a real waking up for me as an artist,” says Jon. ”This album has a different
kind of flavor. It has a refreshing, down to earth sensibility.”
No stranger to Broadway, in 1995 Jon played the lead
role of Danny Zuko in the hit musical Grease, and last summer he portrayed
the Emcee in Cabaret.
Monica Patton stars in the role of the Narrator. Most
recently she starred in the National Tour of Black Broadway. On Broadway
she performed the role of Leah in Abby’s Song and the role of Sarah in
Ragtime. She appeared off Broadway in Langston Hughes’ Jazzical, Little
Ham. She has been in a number of national tours including Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Cinderella and regionally in Blues In The
Night and Can Can.
The role of the Elvis-like Pharaoh will be portrayed by
Ed Staudenmayer and Martin Van Treuren will play dual roles of Jacob and
Potiphar.
This new production is directed and choreographed by
Norb Joerder, with musical direction by Michael Biagi. Produced by
Atlanta’s Theater of the Stars and co-produced by Dallas Summer Musicals,
the show will open in Atlanta on August 24 and then travel to Dallas,
Detroit, Des Moines, Memphis, New Haven, Charlotte, and Hartford.
