Dallas, Texas: Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa
Celebrating History
by

It’s interesting how our
expectations of a luxury hotel evolve over the decades. In 1923, the
historic Art Deco styled Stoneleigh Court (now the Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa)
promoted electric lights, a kitchenette with circulating ice water,
refrigerated air, (air-conditioning) a men’s smoking lounge and a women’s
sun parlor.)
Today’s Stoneleigh (following
a $36 million renovation) remains true to its roaring 1920s roots, but
boasts its king-sized beds, swiveling double-sided dressers, (which holds a
high-definition television) Dallas skyline views, private penthouse
accommodations and elegant bathroom accessories. While times have changed,
the Stoneleigh Hotel has
managed to maintain a beautiful balance between then and now.
We
recently celebrated an anniversary at this sophisticated locale, shared a
memorable meal of sumptuous sushi, wine and cinnamon ice cream and can now
say we slept in the same place as Elvis Presley, Katherine Hepburn, Carol
Burnett, Tom Cruise, Andy Warhol and Frank Lloyd Wright.
In the lobby, it’s difficult
to resist the plush velvet armchairs or avoid staring at the sparkly
chandeliers. Zebra print rugs, modern oversized accessories and photos of
famed guests serve as a visual historical timeline, allowing the past and
present to swirl around together in the luxurious space. Without feeling
haunted, the hotel exudes a feeling that those guests remain part of the
preserved hotel’s story.
The Dallas skyline has
transformed drastically since 1923 when the Stoneleigh Hotel was the tallest
residential hotel west of the Mississippi. Since it is located in the
booming Uptown district, we were able to walk to Steel Restaurant and
Lounge, known as for its contemporary Indochine (modern versions of
specialties from Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean) cuisine.
The crab and mango spring
rolls, Korean beef, firecracker, California and spicy tuna rolls, (I don’t
do eel) and chocolate volcano cake a la cinnamon ice cream was exquisite.
The chic factor rages high here, and it was a fun place to say cheers to our
eight years of marriage.
Our walk back to the hotel
offered more chances to appreciate the scenic views along Turtle Creek. We
mingled in front of the Stoneleigh Hotel for a minute, remembering the many
famed, elegant couples that shared a similar moment, decades ago.
