Russian Winter Festival Brings
Carnival Spirit to McFarlin Auditorium
The 8th Annual Russian Winter Festival returns to
Dallas with a full week of literary events, film presentations, art and
photo exhibits, and discussions on modern Russia that culminates in a gala
concert on Saturday, February 28, 2004, featuring renowned pianist Baya
Kakouberi. The tradition of the Winter Festival in Russian is centuries
old, serving as a farewell to winter and a greeting to the coming spring.
To keep this tradition alive, the Russian American Center has made the
Winter Festival a yearly Texas event, promising a lively evening of
authentic performances by international folk, classical and contemporary
artists – “one of the classiest festivals in Dallas.” (Dallas Observer)
This year’s featured artist – Baya Kakouberi – has had
a highly acclaimed career, taking her from her native homeland in the former
Soviet Union all the way to Carnegie Hall. She has been the recipient of
many prestigious international awards, including “Most Outstanding and
Distinguished Pianist” at the IBLA International Competition in Italy. Ms.
Kakouberi will be performing music by famous Russian composers Rodion
Shchedrin and Alexandr Scriabin. Her performances have been described as
“exquisite…energetic…wonderfully theatrical…electrifying.” (The Durango
Herald)
The two-hour gala program will also include songs from
around the world by international music group Siman Tov, delightful
renditions of Jewish and Gypsy music by duo accordion players Elena and
Grigory Fainshtein of Kaleidoscope, and the most exciting folk dance in the
world, Hopak, performed by the Zorya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble. Performances
by Krassovska Ballet Jeunesse of Dallas, and special guests Broken Dancers
from the Penza orphanage in Russia round out a full evening of dazzling
dance and spirited music.
The Russian American Center continues its tradition of
honoring educators, artists and community leaders for their outstanding
support of cultural, artistic and humanitarian sharing around the world.
This year’s awards recipients are Oleg Vidov, renowned Russian actor and
founder of Films by Jove, Inc., Nana Andronikashvili, community leader, and
Daniel Orlovsky, SMU Professor of Russian History and Culture.
