Riverdance

Rants and Raves

by Dave Shultz

You would have to be living under a rock not to have heard about Riverdance, the Irish Musical/Dance extravaganza.  There are three touring companies performing Riverdance right now.  One touring the United States and Canada, one touring Australia, New Zealand  and Europe and the third performing in the Gershwin Theatre, on Broadway.

Featuring a total company of one hundred, with the remarkable Riverdance Irish Dance Troupe, the cream of Irish musicians in the Riverdance Orchestra and a spectacular array of talent from Spain, Russia and America, all performing to the magic of Bill Whelan's music.

The US touring company recently performed in El Paso, Texas at the Abraham Chavez Theater.  I was invited to attend a performance there and was very excited to be able to see the performance viewed by over 10 million people worldwide.  Knowing how fabulous the footwork would be, I was delighted to have front row center seats at the theater so we wouldnt miss a single step.  Unfortunately, that turned out to be a big mistake.

I can verify that the music was outstanding and I presume the performance was good considering the wild applause that broke out at the end of every number but I didnt get to see any of it.  The theater failed to mention that our front row seats were not really the front row.  It seems that someone at the theater decided that they could squeeze three rows of folding chairs between the front row and the stage.  That wouldnt have been so bad except all the folding chairs were on a raised dias about a foot and a half higher than the actual front row.  We ended up with a perfect view of three rows of heads and literally could not see the stage!!!

Considering the tickets cost $55, the very least I expected was to be able to see the stage.  The music was outstanding and I did get occasional glimpses of performers drifting between heads but unfortunately I still havent seen Riverdance.  El Paso has to be recommended for bringing culture to the desert southwest but I doubt there is any other place in the country that would have the audacity to sell $55 tickets without a view.  I will go to Riverdance again but certainly not at the Abraham Chavez Theater.
