Hilton Canada Wants You to Arrive Safely...

With Your Bags

There is nothing more inconvenient and upsetting than starting a vacation or a business trip with lost luggage. While there are uncontrollable risks when traveling, there are a number of factors that we can control, and that can add a layer of security to the process. As a public service measure, Hilton Canada has some suggestions that may help you avoid arriving alone.

The first tip that any seasoned traveler will offer is that less is more. Obviously, the more bags you take with you, the more bags you can lose, but there are other considerations. Remember, losing track of your belongings for even a split second can result in loss. Professional thieves are quicker than the eye, so having to attend to more bags than you have eyes for will put you at added risk. Keep your bags down to a manageable number!

One solution to the above is to try and pack all of your necessities into 2 carry-on bags. Most major airlines allow you to hang a suit bag at the front of the aircraft, and space below your seat and in overhead compartments is generally adequate. The concept is simple: if you pack lightly, you can keep all of your belongings with you.

If you do have to check bags, try to at least keep your valuables in carry-on bags. If you have no choice, try to mask the valuables in checked bags so that quick moving thieves won't pick up on them at first sight. Don't attract unnecessary attention to your luggage by traveling with designer bags, or by storing your laptop in a recognizable bag.

"You can increase the security of your checked baggage in several ways," says Fred Bannon, Director of Sales and Marketing for Hilton Canada. "Start by clearly labeling your luggage on both the inside and outside of your bags, and be sure to indicate your destination address and telephone number if possible." Applying locks to your luggage is also recommended. "While the locks are very easy to pick or break, thieves will generally start with bags that have no special security features," notes Bannon. Some airports have added a shrink-wrapping service that ultimately protects your bags outside and inside.

In cases where an airline loses your luggage, be sure to file a detailed report with the airline immediately. Carry a list of belongings in a carry-on so that you can speed up the process, and increase the accuracy of your claim. One way to avoid complete disaster in these cases is to swap some items with your traveling companion before you leave, thus ensuring that you have at least something to work with.

Some hotels have procedures in place for assisting lost luggage situations. Hilton hotels across Canada will provide guests with replacement overnight amenity kits, generally consisting of a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, etc. Hilton front desk staff will also assist guests by tracking the search efforts of the commercial carrier who mishandled the luggage. "Losing your luggage while traveling can be a very traumatic event," says Bannon. "We do our best to ensure the comfort of our guests until their property can be located."
