TITAS Presents the Dallas Debut of Daniela Mercury, Queen of Brazilian Pop

by Madelyn Miller

"Constantly in motion, Ms. Mercury made the song-and-dance troupers of MTV look like slackers." -The New York Times

TITAS opens its 2001/2002 Season of Dance & Music with the high-energy music of DANIELA MERCURY, Saturday, September 22nd at 8 p.m. at McFarlin Auditorium. Ms. Mercury's driving rhythms and stellar vocals have placed her at the top of Brazil's music scene, making her the first female performer in Brazil to sell over a million albums. "Imagine a combination of Madonna's feral sensibility with Tina Turner's leggy energy, and add the elegance of Catherine Zeta Jones, and you still haven't described Mercury's impact." (Los Angeles Times)

daniela mercuryA native of Bahia, the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, Ms. Mercury has been dubbed the "Queen of Samba-Reggae" by the press. Her full-bodied mezzo-soprano vocals soar over the incendiary rhythms of her backing band. "The rhythms I use are the rhythms of my country," Mercury says. "It's very important to me that people hear the beauty of the music of the masses." The musically rich region in which Mercury grew up allowed her to absorb everything from Antonio Carlos Jobim's smooth bossa nova tunes to the pounding, percussive African-influenced melodies. This "perpetually active Brazilian volcano" (Boston Phoenix) has assimilated these influences and created a sound all her own. And her live performances are not to be missed. "Mercury had the croud on its feet for much of the performance at the Hollywood Bowl - enthusiastically applauding." (Los Angeles Times)

Tickets ($12-$55) for DANIELA MERCURY are available at the TITAS Box Office, 3101 North Fitzhugh, Suite 301, Dallas, TX or by phoning 214-528-5576 or faxing 214-528-0126.

This special presentation of DANIELA MERCURY is made possible through the generous support of The Dallas Morning News, KERA 90.1 FM, KERA TV, Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, Circle R Group and WFAA-TV.
