The Academy Awards With a Texas Twist

Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Name "Chicago" Best Picture of 2002

The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association voted the big-screen adaptation of the musical CHICAGO as the best film of 2002, according to the results of its ninth annual critics’ poll released today.

Rounding out the composite list of the top 10 films of the year were FAR FROM HEAVEN (2), THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (3), THE PIANIST (4), ABOUT SCHMIDT (5), GANGS OF NEW YORK (6), ADAPTATION (7), ROAD TO PERDITION (8), CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (9) and THE HOURS (10).

For Best Actor, the association named Jack Nicholson for ABOUT SCHMIDT. Runners-up included Daniel Day-Lewis for GANGS OF NEW YORK (2), Adrien Brody for THE PIANIST (3), Nicolas Cage for ADAPTATION (4) and Robin Williams for ONE HOUR PHOTO (5).

Julianne Moore was voted Best Actress for FAR FROM HEAVEN. Next in the voting were Renee Zellweger for CHICAGO (2), Salma Hayek for FRIDA (3), Nicole Kidman for THE HOURS (4) and Isabelle Huppert for THE PIANO TEACHER (5).

In the Best Supporting Actor category, the winner was Chris Cooper for ADAPTATION. He was followed by Dennis Quaid for FAR FROM HEAVEN (2), Paul Newman for ROAD TO PERDITION (3), Ed Harris for THE HOURS (4) and Christopher Walken for CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (5).

For Best Supporting Actress, the association named Kathy Bates for ABOUT SCHMIDT. Runners-up included Meryl Streep for ADAPTATION (2), Edie Falco for SUNSHINE STATE (3), Susan Sarandon for IGBY GOES DOWN (4) and Catherine Zeta-Jones for CHICAGO (5).

Peter Jackson was voted Best Director for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS. Next in the voting were Rob Marshall for CHICAGO (2), Todd Haynes for FAR FROM HEAVEN (3), Roman Polanski for THE PIANIST (4) and Martin Scorsese for GANGS OF NEW YORK (5).

The association voted Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN as the best foreign-language film of the year. Runners-up were TALK TO HER (2), THE FAST RUNNER (3), ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS (4) and MONSOON WEDDING (5).

SPIRITED AWAY was named the best animated film of 2002. BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE won for Best Documentary. The award for Best Cinematography went to Edward Lachman for FAR FROM HEAVEN. FEARDOTCOM was voted the worst film of the year.

The association voted MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING as the winner of the Russell Smith Award, named for the late Dallas Morning News film critic. The honor is given annually to the best low-budget or cutting-edge independent film.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association consists of 59 broadcast and print journalists from throughout North Texas.
