Woman on Wine
Mediterranean Flavor
by
Amy Reiley
I tend
to eat a lot of Mediterranean foods in summer. Simple fish, meat and
vegetable dishes seasoned with summer garden herbs suit me just fine. So it
makes sense that Mediterranean wines would fit the bill as the thirst
quencher of choice for a steamy, July evening. Here are a few choice numbers
from an all-Italian wine tasting I attended last month in Beverly Hills (at
a Lamborghini showroom, no less!)
Magda
Pedrini 2009 Gavi di Gavi Straw yellow in color, this wine brims over
with fruit and floral notes yet maintains elegance. The finish has a bit of
minerality as well as great length.
Drei
Dona 2005 Pruno Sangiovese Riserva Although it probably isn’t the
winery’s finest wine, it is my personal favorite for its intriguing balance
of masculine and feminine notes from tobacco and spice to rose petals and
strawberries.
Cantine
di Marzo 2009 Greco di Tufo Straw yellow in color, this wine brims
over with notes of fruits and flowers yet maintains elegance. The finish has
a bit of minerality as well as great length.
Musella
2008 Vigne Nuove Valpolicella If you like your wine “pretty,” you’re
going to want to go to bed with this one. Think violets and rose petals in a
glass.
