Costa Rica Multisport Adventure

Austin-Lehman Adventures

Pick up the most recent catalog from Austin-Lehman Adventures and you will notice something totally new.  For the first time in their 20-year history of offering high-end North American vacations, the company has gone south of the border.  Cresting the wave of popularity for exotic and ecologically rich tour destinations, Austin-Lehman Adventures now offers a weeklong multisport vacation to the rainforest, volcanoes, and rivers of Costa Rica.

True to the active style and upscale tradition Austin-Lehman Adventures has built its reputation upon, participants receive a grand overview of the varied faces of this small, conservation-minded Central American country.  An ambitious itinerary takes you mountain biking along the flanks of Arenal Volcano where on occasion you may witness ash, smoke and lava spewing from its active crater.  The day ends with a soak in a natural hot springs before returning to the Tilajari Resort Hotel.

Next is a boat trip down the Sarapiqui and San Juan Rivers with a brief visit to a Nicaragua-border village.  Two nights are spent at the award-winning Tortuga Lodge adjacent to Tortuguero National Park.  From this jungle base local guides lead wildlife walks and boat tours to view caiman, sloths, a myriad of exotic and endangered birds, and several species of monkeys.  You can also head out in tandem sea kayaks and on unique human-powered hydro-bikes to explore the park’s many palm-covered canals and waterways.

The adventure culminates with a flight back to San José and shuttle to the Orosi Valley where guests embark on a full-day whitewater raft trip down the Class III and IV Pacuare River.  Renown for its wilderness setting and fed by numerous 100-foot waterfalls cascading from the canyon rim, the river journey is punctuated by a gourmet picnic lunch and playful rapids before returning to a San José hotel for a farewell dinner.  2003 and 2004 departures in September through January coincide with the prime time climate-wise to visit Costa Rica.  The seven-day, six-night all-inclusive package runs $1,998 per person, international air not included.

Company Director Dan Austin drew from his many years of client feedback and personal expertise in crafting this vacation.  In his words, “I’ve become a critic over the years, always looking for what could be done better finer accommodations, a better trail, smoother coordination, and every attention to detail.  But our new adventure in Costa Rica has me digging deep and coming up empty.  This trip has it all: the natural flow of a classic Austin-Lehman adventure, the cultural diversity you might expect, abundant and exotic wildlife, jaw-dropping scenery, a blend of fun activities, exquisite meals, and above all, a close camaraderie between our guests and our local guides.  All of this adds up to make Costa Rica one of my all-time favorites.”

With the reputation of having the adventure travel industry’s most generous guide to guest ratio, group size is limited to just 12 participants.  As is the case with all Austin-Lehman adventures, the trip comes with one of the most consumer-friendly guarantees in the business.  If for any reason your expectations are not met and they are unable to resolve the matter to your satisfaction, Austin-Lehman Adventures will refund up to 100% of the trip fee.

The company’s extensive portfolio of adventures for 2003 and 2004 includes 25 distinctive multisport trips throughout the U.S. and Canada and now Costa Rica.  Many have been exclusively designed for families.  In addition to its inaugural Latin America offering, new trips for 2003 include a bike and kayak tour of Nova Scotia, a luxury adventure to Vancouver and the Gulf Islands, and an exploration of the mountains, rivers and meadows of Jasper National Park. Trips are weeklong and conveniently run from weekend to weekend.  Prices start at $1,898 per person with single supplements starting at $400.  Rates for children age seven and up begin at $1,398.
