11th Annual Hula Festival
Honors Princess Ka`iulani
Each
year in October the Sheraton Princess Ka`iulani hotel hosts a week of special
events honoring the legacy and birthday of its namesake, Princess Victoria
Ka`iulani. Appropriately named Hana Ho`ohiwahiwa `O Ka`iulani (to
celebrate and honor Ka`iulani), the commemoration week is scheduled for October
9 – 16, 2005. Each day of Hana Ho`ohiwahiwa `O Ka`iulani a different
complimentary cultural activity including hula lessons, fresh flower lei making,
ukulele lessons, wood crafting will be offered from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on
the hotel’s Dolphin Lanai. The climax of the weeklong celebration is the
Princess Ka`iulani Keiki Hula Festival on Saturday, October 15, 2005 from 9:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Ainahau Showroom.
The
popular festival showcases performances by over 200 keiki (children) ages 5 – 12
years old from various halau (hula schools) on the island of Oahu. This
non-competitive hula festival is open to everyone and admission is free.
The festival will also feature a historical portrayal of
Princess Ka`iulani (played by a member of Tihati Productions) performing a
beautiful hula, costumed in a replica of the nineteenth-century gown seen in the
princess’ life-size portrait in the hotel lobby.
An
arts and crafts fair in the Ainahau Lobby scheduled for the same morning from
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. offers an opportunity to purchase locally handcrafted
items, including Hawaiian jewelry, instruments, hula ornaments, feather leis and
seed bracelets or browse among numerous tables displaying crafts by island
artisans.
