Putt the Peaks and Plains of Colorado

Statewide golf courses keep visitors on "par" for a first-class challenge

Colorado is ready to tee off the beginning of another great golf season. From spectacular layouts by world-renowned designers and golf professionals to world-class amenities and extraordinary services, Colorado has a golf course worth visiting, at any elevation.

Courses in and around the Denver metropolitan area are open, on average, more than 300 days per year, but are at their best during the spring and summer months. The 4-year-old, challenging, 18-hole Heritage Eagle Bend Golf and Country Club in Aurora provides spectacular views of the majestic Rockies (303-400-6700). On the other side of Denver, the brand new Fossil Trace Golf Club, near Golden, features a beautiful, Jim Engh-designed course that tests golfers' skills at the base of the foothills (www.fossiltrace.com). North of Denver, Riverdale Dunes is a Scottish links-style course located in Brighton, Colo. The Pete Dye-designed course has hosted the U.S. Public Links Championships and features railroad ties, pot bunkers and bent grass tees, fairways and greens for players of all abilities (303-659-6700).

Head west where the greens, views and challenging courses grow. Haymaker Golf Course, the newest course to grace the Yampa Valley near Steamboat Springs, offers 230 acres of rolling fairways, deep bunkers, meandering streams and native grasses (www.haymakergolf.com). Turn your angle of approach south and land at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction. The course combines breathtaking views of the spectacular rock spirals of the Colorado National Monument and the beauty of the area's Grand Mesa with a challenging, affordable course for every player (970-263-9270).

Strategic play is the name of the game in golf and Devil's Thumb Golf Course, in Delta, Colo., was designed specifically to challenge the duffer's mind. There are multiple options for shot execution on every hole, from a low-running shot to a high, soft spinner, making this a course worth "putting" for (970-874-6262). Pagosa Springs Golf Club is a mountain masterpiece with 27 holes of championship golf at the base of the San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado (970-731-4755).

Discover one of Colorado's best-kept secrets at Grandote Peaks Golf Club in La Veta. Designed by golf pro Tom Weiskopf, this course is wedged between tall mountain peaks and beckons golfers to reach new elevations in their game (719-742-3391). Travel further out on the Colorado plains and pick your course at Mossland Memorial Golf Course, near Flagler (719-765-4659), or at the renowned Fort Morgan Golf Course (970-867-5990). Both courses offer wide open spaces and meandering fairways for the golf and scenic enthusiast.
