tick, tick, BOOM!

A New Musical From the Creator of Rent

It’s the week of Jonathan’s 30th birthday.
His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city tick…
His best friend has bought a BMW and is moving uptown tick…
And Jon’s waiting tables and trying to write the great American musical BOOM!

The producers of tick, tick…BOOM!, a new musical by Jonathan Larson, the 1996 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner for Rent, announced that Christian Campbell, Wilson Cruz, and Nicole Snelson are set to star in the national tour of the off-Broadway musical. The production, directed by Scott Schwartz with script consultation by the 2001 Pulitzer Prize winning playwright David Auburn, will be brought by Broadway in Dallas Contemporary Series, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals at The Majestic Theatre for its North America opening in Dallas, January 7-12, 2003.

Single tickets to tick, tick…BOOM!, ranging in price from $19 to $51, are on sale now at The Box Office, 542 Preston Royal Shopping Center, and all Ticketmaster outlets, including The Majestic Theatre Box Office, Fiesta Marts, Foley’s, Tower Records and Sound Wherehouse.   Tickets are also available by calling 214-631-ARTS or online at www.ticketmaster.com.  For groups of 20 or more, call 214-426-GROUP.

Christian Campbell, founder of the Blue Sphere Alliance, the resident company at Los Angeles’ Lexington Theatre, made a name for himself when he starred in the 1999 musical comedy Reefer Madness, an adaptation of the cult classic film of the same name. The show received six Ovation Awards including Best Musical and won seven L.A. Drama Critics Circle Awards, with Christian taking home the award for Lead Performance. Other roles include the voice of Max Steel in the WB animated series “Max Steel” and the Fox pilot “The $treet.” He’s also acted in numerous films, most recently The Good Things, winner of the Deauville Film Festival’s Best Short Film award and Thank You, Good Night, winner of the Tambay Film and Video Festival’s Jury Award.

Wilson Cruz is best known for his portrayal of the troubled, introspective teenager Ricky in the critically acclaimed ABC-TV series “My So-Called Life,” which won him and five other cast members a Young Artist Award for Best Performance by a Youth Ensemble in a Television Series. In addition to “My So Called Life,” Wilson Cruz’s television credits include the role of Victor on “Party of Five,” for which he won an ALMA Award for Emerging Actor in a Drama Series. He has had guest appearances on “Ally McBeal,” “ER,” and “Sister, Sister,” and has appeared in numerous feature films including Nixon, Johns, Joyride, All Over Me, Supernova and the upcoming Party Monster, which will also star Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green. Wilson is very familiar with Jonathan Larson’s work, as he created the role of Angel in the Los Angeles production of Rent.

Nicole Ruth Snelson originated the role of Winnie Tate in the Grammy and Tony Award winning Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette Peters. She has appeared in the national touring companies of Beauty and the Beast, Showboat and Hello, Dolly with Carol Channing.  Miss Snelson studied Musical Theatre at The Boston Conservatory of Music. TV credits include “Guiding Light,” “The Young and the Restless,” and “The Miss America Pageant”.

A musical look at facing a crossroad in life and holding onto your dreams, tick, tick…BOOM! tells the story of a young composer (Christian Campbell) on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. His girlfriend (Nicole Snelson) wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend (Wilson Cruz) is making big bucks on Madison Avenue and he’s still waiting tables and trying to write the great American musical. Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band, tick, tick…BOOM! takes you on the playwright/composer’s journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster, Rent.

Originally performed by Larson as a solo show in 1990, this new version of tick, tick…BOOM! received its world premiere off-Broadway at the Jane Street Theatre in June 2001. “I didn’t really re-work Jonathan’s piece as much as I edited the script he wrote,” David Auburn recently told BroadwayOnline.com. “I worked off of more than five drafts of the material, and I just shaped and re-orchestrated it for three performers.”

Set in 1990, BOOM! is structured as a three actor show. Unlike Rent, which is mostly sung-through, BOOM! is a more traditional book musical with 14 songs. While the musical is certain to delight Rent fans, “the show stands on its own as a youthful, endearing, delightful and thoughtful hymn to the possibilities and desperations of young talent on the verge of being less than young” enthused Newsday. WOR Radio proclaimed “tick, tick…BOOM! a rare treat that everyone, regardless of age, will love.” “The songs are melodic and instantly appealing, blending pop-rock orchestrations with classic musical theater structures,” added Variety.

Performances will be Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m., followed by two performances Sat., Jan. 11 at 2 and 8 p.m. and two performances Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2 and 8 p.m.  For more information, call Ticketmaster at 214-631-ARTS or visit their website at www.ticketmaster.com.

Burn the Floor, the international dance sensation where Ballroom and Rock ‘n Roll collide, will be the second show in the Broadway in Dallas Contemporary Series, presented by Dallas Summer Musical at the Music Hall at Fair Park for one week only April 15-20, 2003.

Mamma Mia!, a new musical based on the songs of ABBA that has become one of the most successful musicals of all time,  will be presented as the third regular season show.  BDCS subscribers’ week will be Oct. 15-20; Mamma Mia!, which is also a Dallas Summer Musicals season offering and the State Fair of Texas musical for 2003, will be presented at the Music Hall at Fair Park Sept. 30-Oct. 20.
