Piccadilly Treasure: Le Meridien Hotel
By Barbara Ballard
Location,
location, location--Le Meridien Piccadilly has it. Centrally located between
Piccadilly and Regent Street, in the heart of London's West End, the hotel
is just a hop, skip, and jump from Piccadilly Circus and Piccadilly
underground station. The National gallery is nearby while Soho and Oxford
street are within striking distance. But there is more to this hotel than
its great location.
It has fabulous mattresses on the beds, something sadly
lacking in most of the UK's hotels. After all, at the end of the day, the
purpose in having a hotel room is for sleeping. Le Meridien Piccadilly has
got this right.
The
rooms come in several types: standard, deluxe, exclusive, and three types of
suites. My room was decorated in the new hotel-style colours of beige and
brown. The room was equipped with a mini-bar, a chair and a desk with a fax
machine and connection for using a laptop. For those who don't have a
laptop, there is one computer located on the ground floor for an internet
connection. My bathroom was tiny with an old-fashioned narrow tub, but there
was a good shower over it and lots of nice towels and toiletries. Fully
air-conditioned, the hotel is comfortable even when London is having a heat
wave.
Another
fabulous point in Le Meridien's favour is Champney's Health Club, located
within the hotel. Champney's facilities include a heated indoor swimming
pool, gymnasium, cardiovascular room, squash courts, treatment rooms, sauna,
Turkish bath, and Jacuzzi. The pool is set in such elegant surroundings,
you'll want to go buy a swimsuit just so you can use it. Fabulous!
Champney's is one of the most elegant hotel health clubs I have ever
experienced.
Breakfast
is served in the Terrace restaurant. The buffet includes everything you
could want, and you can also order from the menu. The glass topped and sided
restaurant is a pleasant place to dine. The Oak Room lounge, off the lobby
is a chandeliered and luxurious spot for afternoon tea.
Le
Meridien has 266 rooms, but the hotel is popular and busy, so book ahead if
you want to stay in this fine hotel.
