A Celebration Of Texas Wine

Grapefest 2004 was a celebration of Texas wine.  Over 240,000 people attended Grapefest, the largest wine festival in the Southwest on September 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th in Grapevine, Texas.

Texas now has 87 wineries and is the 5th largest wine producing state in the nation.  The popularity of Texas wines is escalating as evidenced by the over 20,000 plus votes received for the 2004 Peoples Choice.

Messina Hof, Texas’ Most Awarded Winery, continued its campaign that started with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition.  And we’re not talking Longhorns here, this is all about fine wine!  Messina Hof ranked with 8 Champions, 4 Reserve Champions and the Grand Champion of the competition.  Titled ‘Paulo’, this Grand Champion raised $17,000 for a single 9 liter bottle --- the highest price ever paid for a bottle of Texas wine.

The Peoples Choice is the culmination of several recent awards recognizing superior Messina Hof wines.  Some of these awards include:

  • Best Merlot - previously awarded Best of Show at the New Orleans Wine and Food Extravaganza.

  • Best Vintage White Johannisberg Riesling - the standout performer on the Pappadeaux’s wine list and previously voted Texas’ Finest White Wine.

  • Best Vintage Red Paulo 2001 - The Grand Champion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition.

  • Silver and Bronze Chardonnay Awards for Angel -- a Late Harvest Johannisberg Riesling.

Winemaker Paul Bonarrigo said “The wines of Texas are world class.  It is wonderful to see Texans making Texas wine the fastest growing sales region out of all the great wines of the world.”

Also, The Lone Star Awards were announced on Friday, September 10th, and Messina Hof swept the competition with 20 medals - 6 Golds, 5 Silvers and 9 Bronzes.

Messina Hof Winery and Resort, located in Bryan, Texas, was established in 1977 and is founded on family values, romance and tradition. From its initial production of 1,500 gallons of wine in 1983, Messina Hof has continued to serve the community and ranks as the fastest growing and most award-winning winery in the state. Messina Hof is one of the largest tourist attractions in the Brazos County second only to Texas A&M University.
