Adventures in Photography

Capture Whales, Icebergs and Historic Architecture in Labrador

Anyone with an interest in photography, nature, or historic architecture, should check out "A Photography Adventure," a unique trip to Labrador offered by Maxxim Vacations, of Canada. It is scheduled for July 12-19, 1999 on a first-come, first-served basis.  This trip has never before been offered and that is limited to only 10 participants.

The destination for the weeklong trip is Battle Harbour, an island in the Labrador Sea. The community was the focus of a seven-year restoration project and last year was declared a National Historic Site.

In the 1770s, Battle Harbour was the commercial capital of Labrador. Now, it is experiencing new life. With its natural diversity, pristine air, crystal-clear waters, colorful and varied plant life, unique geological formations, and ever-present sea birds it attracts naturalists and photographers alike. Whale watching and iceberg-spotting are prime interests. Mid-July, when this trip is scheduled, is the peak time for viewing icebergs.

Battle Harbour also appeals to history and architecture buffs. Its waterfront and merchant premises are impressive examples of traditional mercantile architecture, with buildings and settings that provide picture-perfect photo opportunities.

Highlights of the trip include workshops and slide shows conducted by noted Newfoundland photographer Ned Pratt, plus architectural and photography tours of the community. There are coastal boat tours, including an evening excursion where low-light photography will be explored. Memorable meals feature fresh-boiled lobster, mussels, pan-fried cod, and other Newfoundland specialties, including "boil ups" along the shore.

Ned Pratt, one of Canada's preeminent photographers, was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and grew up in the small community of St. Catherine's at the head of St. Mary's Bay. He is a graduate in art history from Acadia University in Nova Scotia and holds a fine arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His work has appeared in such publications as The New York Times and Newsweek. It also has been showcased in a number of national exhibitions and is found in many private, public, and corporate collections.

Included in the trip is a stay in St. John's, the oldest city in North America. It is along this stretch of rugged coast the most easterly point on the continent that the sun first rises on the New World and the waves of Europe crash onto our shores. St. John's is a town steeped in history and full of fun. There is Signal Hill where in 1901 Marconi received the first transatlantic radio signal. And lively George Street where pubs and clubs feature fiddle and accordion music with a distinct Newfoundland Irish flavor.

"A Photography Adventure" is priced at a remarkably low $2,379 (US) per person. Included is return airfare New York/Boston to St. John's, an overnight stay in historic St. John's, air and boat transfers to Battle Harbour, three daily traditional Newfoundland meals, and seven nights' comfortable accommodations in charming Battle Harbour. Also included are workshops conducted by renowned photographer Ned Pratt. Departures are also available from other Air Canada gateway cities, at slightly higher prices.
