Spectacular September: A Taste of Keystone

Keystone Resort, Colorado

by Sheree Bykofsky

More often than not, when someone thinks about Colorado, they think about skiing, but after a recent trip to The Centennial State, I have come to the conclusion that early September is the most sublime time to visit; more specifically, it is the perfect time to visit Keystone Resort. Keystone is a picturesque mountain resort that has, seemingly, been plucked right from the front of a postcard and vibrantly brought to life. With its location in the heart of the beautiful Rocky Mountains, it is a place that, yes, abounds with fun winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding and even dog-sledding, but come the warmer spring and summer months, this quaint Colorado village comes to life on a whole new level. From a myriad of trails on which to hike, bike and explore, to outstanding golf courses on which to perfect your round of golf and fun festivals to enjoy, Keystone offers something fun for every traveler.

There are a wide variety of accommodations at Keystone, but the most special and luxurious are the fantastic Lone Eagle and The Timbers condos. The inviting swimming pools are perfect for a dip, or you may enjoy a soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi or in your personal giant soaking tub in your suite. The suites also feature romantic fireplaces, extraordinary comfortable beds and coaches, and wonderfully equipped kitchens – all the comforts of a luxury home while on vacation.

During non-peak times, there are many value packages offered, and the prices come way, way down. For those of you who just can’t bear the thought of leaving your four-legged family member at home, well, you’ll be thrilled to know that the Inn at Keystone welcomes pets, and rooms at the Inn, with soaking tubs on every level, can be had for under $100 in September.

There are so many beautiful places to explore on and around the mountain and throughout the expansive Resort that from time to time you will have to catch your breath. Visiting Keystone Resort in September means that there are no crowds, there is no traffic and the weather is usually perfect. The village lake abounds with ducks and swans, and on many days you’ll feel like you have it all to yourselves. Everywhere are views of the snow-capped mountains and wildflowers bloom brightly. Activities such as mountain-biking, swimming, and hiking can keep you busy all day, or you may choose to take an adventurous excursion. Sign up for fly fishing at Summit Fly Fishing in Lakeside Village and let the guide do the rest. He will drive you to where the fish are biting, such as in the gorge of the breath-taking Eleven Mile Canyon where everyone is sure to get a bite – hey, I caught three fish! September also brings with it the annual culinary event, Taste of Keystone, and this is one extravaganza that should not be missed.

During the Taste of Keystone, held around the lake in Lakeside Village, foodies can savor dishes from an array of Keystone’s very fine restaurants, while a local band plays fabulous music and locals and a few lucky tourists dance and chat and eat more than on Thanksgiving. Whether sampling Dos Loco’s steak and shrimp Mexican taco, Edgewater Café’s cranberry and apple stuffed pork loin served with fresh herb couscous and a Port wine sauce, or Pastry Shop chef, Ned Archibald’s white chocolate spaghetti and meatballs, mouths are left watering. Be sure to arrive hungry, because you will want to try at least one of everything.

The 2011 menu also included a chef carved certified Angus Beef shoulder tender from Bighorn Steakhouse, whiskey and apricot braised bison short ribs from Alpenglow Stube, and “Kalu” pork wing with Asian slaw from Black Bear Grill. Other notable items were the Rocky Ford cantaloupe and shrimp ceviche from Ski Tip Lodge and the watermelon and mache, fresh heart of palm and citrus vinaigrette from Keystone’s Ranch Restaurant. Are you hungry yet? Just imagining the tasty morsels that are sure to fill next year’s menu leave me salivating. The fantastic atmosphere, array of culinary treasures, and a great band filling the mountain air with music allows for an all-round, fun-filled family day.

Good thing you don’t have to wait until September, though, to sample great food in Keystone. This gem of a resort is just filled with tasty treats. For example, the Alpenglow Stube is more than just a world-class restaurant. It’s also an adventure. To get to this AAA Four-DiamondÔ rated restaurant, which is excitingly up in the middle of nowhere, you must first travel about a half hour aboard two gondolas. Enjoy the breath-taking ride all the way to the top of the resorts North PeakÒ, 11, 444 feet above sea level. It’s hard to believe you can find such a gourmet extravaganza atop a remote mountain.

Another must visit is the Ski Tip Lodge. A stagecoach stop in the 1800’s that has since been transformed into a welcoming bed and breakfast, offers some of the best food in town. As soon as you step through the door of the hobbit-like cottage, you’ll know you’re in a magical fairy-tale place, although Snow White might have weighed considerably more if she feasted on this menu every day. Comfy seating and a rustic fireplace add to the ambience of the lodge and, once there, you’ll find that you never want to leave.

For a cozy, comfort-of-home coffee, breakfast or lunch, you must definitely try Inxpot. With an assortment of delicious pastries, scrumptious meals and freshly brewed coffee, combined with a friendly atmosphere, a bite at Inxpot gives customers that feeling of being accepted as one of the locals. Comfy sofas, book-lined bookshelves and play-ready chessboards make the place so inviting that you will likely forget that you aren’t actually in the comfort of your own home.

When you’ve eaten all that you can eat and you’ve allowed yourself the opportunity to enjoy some of Keystone’s many activities you might be anxious for some relaxation. Instead of simply crawling into bed, or not even getting out of bed, enjoy some time at the Keystone Spa. Pull on a plush, heated robe and submerge your tired feet into a warm foot bath filled with rose petals while sipping on a glass of fresh, cucumber water and be sure to treat yourself to a heavenly Kodo massage. Choose the scents that will lead you to a place of inner tranquility and relax on the heated contoured bed while the skilled massage therapist eases your muscles, relieves any tension you might have and realigns your body’s energy. The spa at Keystone Resort gives new meaning to balancing and connecting your mind, body, heart and soul and whether you choose to delight yourself with a facial, massage or one of their other special treatments, you will leave the spa feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and whole.

Getting around to explore all of Keystone is quick and easy: simply dial 4200 from any resort phone and you will be connected to the Keystone Ease bus. Transportation will then arrive to pick you up within 15 minutes and will transport you, free of charge, to any desired location on the resort.

So next September, instead of the same old, same old, think about visiting Keystone and experience all that it has to offer. Explore, discover, eat and play, and leave Keystone Resort both full in belly and full in spirit. To learn more about Keystone Resort, visit: www.keystoneresort.com
