Hidden Bahamas

Book Review

by Dave Shultz

CoverThis is the second edition of Hidden Bahamas by Ulysses Press written by Richard Harris and Lynn Seldon. From the popular spots of Grand Bahamas, Nassau and Bimini to the remote and exotic Out Islands, Hidden Bahamas covers all of the lush resorts and little know hide-aways that will fit every budget and travel style. This expanded edition explores harbor inns and seafood fares, sleepy towns and untouched beaches. When you include information on sea kayaking, wild dolphin swims and horseback trips, there's no doubt this book will guide you not only to luxury but adventure as well.

In another time, pirates chose Nassau as a base of operations, and this ancient site of adventure is where the writers begin their coverage of the Bahamas. They will guide you on a walking tour of historic Nassau that features distinctive sights like the pink limestone government buildings and Port Lucaya Marketplace, a pedestrian only waterfront mall centered around a bandstand that pulses nightly with island music.

More than any other guidebook, Hidden Bahamas explores the often-overlooked Out Islands. Chapters are dedicated to discovering the islands' restful villas and local cuisine, coral sand beaches and bonefishing spots, and historic fortresses and osprey inhabited lighthouses.

Included are details of over 33 islands and caves as well as over 60 beaches and 80 scuba diving spots. The authors recommend ethnic restaurants including 19 that serve lobster and 38 that offer the locally popular conch.

Hidden Bahamas enriches the travelers' experience by giving background information about the land itself; it's history, culture, dialect and lifestyle. With respect for the Bahamas' natural beauty, the book also covers ecotourism and environmental groups that sponsor field workshops.
