10 Tips for Spring and Summer Travelers

by Madelyn Miller

How do you make a good vacation even better? You can start with making sure you have the right clothing and gear to suit the weather and your needs. Knowing what to bring, especially if you are going somewhere new will make your next adventure more enjoyable. But the true sense of accomplishment comes from bringing just what your need and nothing more. Items that do double duty are worth their weight in gold (or non-weight of the thing it replaces)

1) Call ahead for a gear list (adventure travelers especially) from the place you are going. If possible, call someone else who has gone on the same trip, as they will know best what they did and did not need.

2) Versatile clothing will save luggage room. L.L. Bean's Cargo Travel Parka has zip-off sleeves so it functions as both jacket and vest, and their Ripstop Climber Pants are great for hiking and touring because the zip-off legs turn them into shorts when the weather changes.

3) Use an organizer for traveler's checks, plane tickets and other important documents. Keep everything together and organized. I have used a thin plastic colored report holder and it works great--lightweight, inexpensive, and the color catches your eye.

4) Don't forget raingear. Look for raingear that is lightweight, breathable, comfortable and packs into its own pocket for easy storage.

5) Customize your footwear to suit your activities to keep your feet happy throughout your entire trip. But always bring a second pair of shoes just in case yours get wet or torn. Ever try to buy comfortable shoes on the road? Not a fun mission, and not always possible to complete. I believe in alternating shoes everyday to keep your feet on their toes

6) Choose a gear bag or backpack that distributes weight evenly, so as not to put too much strain on one specific spot. And be sure to leave room in your suitcase or bring an extra bag. A shoulder bag that converts to a backpack can be a real lifesaver for overzealous souvenir shoppers.

7) Don't forget a dependable travel alarm! Relying solely on a hotel wake-up call has accounted for many a missed flight.

8) If you bring the dog, be sure he's comfortable too. Fido's favorite blanket will add comfort while saving your back seat. Bring water in a Packable Travel Pet bowl and if you must leave him in the car, make sure it is only for a few minutes and leave the windows cracked for ventilation.

9) High quality sunglasses, especially if you are driving, are a must for any trip. Choose polarized lenses to cut glare off windshields and guard against UV rays.

10) Be prepared for the unexpected. Carry a first aid kit and a folding umbrella. If you are hiking or going into more remote places, you may want a weather radio or weather monitor so you don't get caught off guard.
