QUEBEC CITY FESTIVALWORLD-CLASS CITY CELEBRATIONby MADELYN MILLER Imagine a city transformed into a gigantic stage. Then image a performance against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful World Heritage cities anywhere.
Luckily, someone else has already had this vision. And so the Quebec City International Summer Festival was created 30 years ago. You might consider a celebration for your soul. Because it is world-class music sealed with a French kiss. Each year the city's streets, concert halls and outdoor stages have welcomed thousands of performers for an annual outpouring of music that's not to be missed. The mood is laid back, friendly and full of joie devivre as music fans everywhere converge on the old quarter. This year's festival will be held July 3 to 13. There are more than 400 shows from 20 countries performing at 15 venues, mostly outdoor, and a total audience of 2.5 million people over the 10 days. This is truly a unique musical urban happening. Festival goers can wander from one venue to another for everything from classical music to worldbeat. Recognized as one of the most important cultural events in North America--the festival plays host to nearly 800 artists and performers from four continents. But besides all this wonderful music--I enjoyed just being in Quebec City--dining on French cuisine at affordable prices, walking around the quaint streets, looking at picture-postcard views of the St. Lawrence River, and enjoying the friendly people. Whether you're a die-hard music fan or a lover of street entertainment, whatever your language or musical tastes, the Quebec City Summer Festival will be music to yours.
