WAILEA

by Madelyn Miller

SUN SOAKED DAYS AND PICTURE-PERFECT VIEWS MAKE THIS A GOLF PARADISE. If you love golf, you'll absolutely love Wailea.  This incredible 1,5000 -acre resort boasts three award-winning courses and more sun soaked days than any other Hawaiian resort--all in a setting that is nothing short of world-class.

WAILEA offers two new and exciting courses--the Gold and Emerald--both named by Golf Magazine among the top ten new courses in the nation. GOLF DIGEST ranked the Gold one of the best new resort courses and consistently rates the WAILEA Blue Course among the finest in Hawaii.

The 7,070 yard Gold Course is Wailea's claim to golfing fame. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., it offers a classical golf experience and natural hazards unique to Wailea: papohaku or ancient lava rock walls built by early Hawaiians were left in place and incorporated into the course.

Another hazard that the Gold shares with Wailea's other courses are visual ones. Scenery so breathtaking that your concentration can easily clip away from golf to the blue Pacific and the neighboring islands of Lanai, Kahoolaw and Molokini.

The Blue Course at Wailea meanders throughout the resort amidst million dollar homes and condominiums. This 6,758 yard course is undeniably the grand lady of Wailea.

Designed by Arthur Jack Snyder, the Blue Course at WAILEA has developed a reputation as a course for everyone. Wide fairways make it appealing to the high handicapper while the nature of its design offers a true challenge to those who play a the next level.

The Blue Course at Wailea shares the Gold's beautiful scenic vistas, but also adds colorful splendor with many types of flowering trees like bougainvillea, hibiscus and plumeria . When immersed in such beautiful surroundings there just never is a bad game of golf.

The newest course a WAILEA the Emerald Course, was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and rounds out WaILEA'S palate of championship golf courses. A round of golf on the Emerald will be a round in a tropical playground. Spectacular views of Mount Haleakala and the Pacific Oceans plus lush gardens with brilliant blooms, may be part of the reason the Emerald Course got its first award--a top ten new course rating by GOLF MAGAZINE.

Notable features of the Emerald Course include a double green shared by holes #10 and #17, and fronted by a 2.7 million gallon brackish water lake. On hole #13, two sets of three tee boxes allow the course to mix and match tee boxes into at least eight combinations. Rounding out the course are 83 bunkers filled with sand from Malaysia. Bordered by a lake and commanding an incredible view of the ocean, it's the perfect reason to include a camera in your golf bag.

A chip shot away from WAILEA'S fairways are some some of the finest luxury hotels and condominiums. No matter where you stay in Wailea, you will feel like you are in paradise. But my two favorite places are the Grand Wailea and The Four Seasons Resort Wailea.

With five of the island's most beautiful white-sand beaches, Wailea offers a myriad of water activities; swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing, and excursions to Molokini, a submerged volcano that is home to thousands of deep-sea fish. In winter, Wailea's waters are also home to the gentle humpback whale.

From Wailea, you can explore the rugged beauty of Maui's Haleakala Crater, historic Lahaina, or remote Hana, and still be home in time to see the setting sun turn Wailea's waters to golf.
