WHISTLER. NOT JUST FOR SKIING
by Madelyn Miller
The
idea that Whistler Resort is only for skiers now has 54 holes in it. Four
championship golf courses have made pros and amateurs turn their attention
to Whistler Resort in British Columbia, Canada. Whistler Resort is a year-round
destination, offering endless outdoor activities in the summer months such
as golf, hiking, summer skiing and water sports. Some summer guests enjoy
skiing in the morning and a round of golf in the afternoon.
Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Cupp and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
are four of the greatest minds in golf. Each designed a dream course for
Whistler Resort. Your toughest decision is which to play first.
Sweeping mountain views from the edge of gorgeous Green Lake are the
inspiration for Nicklaus North, a new course designed to test every golfer's
instincts and skills. From the championship Nicklaus tees it's a 6,925
yard par 71 challenge. From four sets of alternate tees it's the perfect
combination of excitement and enjoyment. Surrounded by trails and parkland,
Nicklaus North is as close to nature as golf can get.
The next day of your trip, you might want to try Chateau Whistler Golf
Course--it's a 18 hole, par 72 masterpiece. It rises more than 400 feet,
traverses mountain ledges and crosses rushing streams. And in 1993, GOLF
DIGEST rated it the Best New Resort Course in Canada. Designed by Robert
Trent Jones, Jr. this is a course that appeals to all of the senses.
The layout of the Chateau Whistler Golf Course was achieved by allowing
nature to dictate the path without the restraints of commercial influence.
Creeks, ponds, granite rock faces and stands of ancient Douglas Fir are
testimony to the fact that this stunning course closely follows the natural
terrain.
Make sure Whistler Golf Course is on your to-do-list, too. Spectacular
snow capped mountain ranges surround the picturesque Whistler valley, creating
a dramatic setting for the meticulously groomed championship Arnold Palmer
designed course. GOLF MAGAZINE awarded the Whistler Golf Club its silver
medal in 1989 distinguishing it as one of the best courses in the world.
And don't miss Big Sky Golf and Country Club. Nestled at the base of
Mount Currie, this championship 18-hole, par 72 layout was designed by
renowned golf course architect, Robert Cupp. It was recently awarded the
Runner-up honors by Golf Digest in the Best New Canadian course category.
Each of these courses shows an outstanding awareness and sensitivity
toward the area's natural habitat.
