Hidden Coast of CaliforniaA Travel Book Review by Dave Shultz When I first started planning my trip to Oxnard, California to visit the California Strawberry Festival, there was one guide book I considered essential. Ulysses Press Hidden Coast of California. There are lots of guide books on California but I long ago learned the the 'Hidden' series of books give me more of what I need to know about an area I'm visiting.
The information is both concise and detailed. Everything you need to plan a trip is there plus the bonus of interesting and exciting places not on the normal tourist track. Maps for navigation are more helpful than the state maps handed out for free at the travel centers because they have more detail and cover the specific area you're in. Details on the history of an area help you understand the influences that shaped it into what you are seeing. Extra special touches are the sections on Traveling With Children, Disabled Travelers, Senior Travelers, Women Traveling Alone, Gay & Lesbian Travelers and Foreign Travelers. This guide is broken down into geographic areas of the coast which include an overview of the entire coast and specific areas of San Francisco, North Coast, North Central Coast, South Central Coast, Los Angeles Area, Orange Coast, and San Diego Coast. If I can only take one travel guide with me, it will be one of the 'Hidden' series of books and this one was no exception.
