A LITTLE BIT OF AFRICA IN CALIFORNIA
Safari West Offers a Tour of Endangered Species
Safari West, five miles north of Santa Rosa, offers a
private tour of a little-known and most unusual country estate: one dedicated
to breeding endangered species. Zoologist Nancy Lang accompanies guests on a
World War II personnel carrier past various antelope -- eland, shy red bongos,
addax with fairy horns -- kangaroo, unearthly blue-crowned pigeons, and even a
herd of Watusi cattle. Some species, like the scimitar-horned oryx (an African
antelope), are extinct in the wild. Tours last two-and-a-half-hours, so bring
lots of film.
To complete the safari experience, "Tent
Camping" is also available. It’s the ultimate luxury in outdoor living
with magnificent sweeping views of the animals and countryside. And don’t be
fooled by the name: tents are one bedroom with king-size bed and separate
bathroom.
Essential Information:
Custom tours and special events are available for
groups. Safaris are by appointment only, seven days a week. Sunset safaris are
also available by appointment. Admission is $48 per person; children 16 and
under, half price.
