THE ONE THING I TAKE AND USE ON EVERY TRIP

by Madelyn Miller

I won't leave home with out it
(and it is not a credit card)

Some people have to have their special pillow. Other people always take pictures of their family. Some people sleep better with their teddy bear. But I have a new "must take" travel accessory--my Waterpik™ Flosser.

Both my Mom and the dentist must be proud of me.

Because I not only take it everywhere, I use it. I am now a completely flossed woman.

Almost everyone carries dental floss with them. But just because we buy it, doesn’t necessarily mean we use it. Research indicates that although 65 percent of American households purchase dental floss, only 10 percent actually floss on a regular basis.  Although far from enjoyable, flossing is essential to good oral health.  The newest innovation from Waterpik Technologies, Inc., the Waterpik™ Flosser, is designed for convenience and to alleviate what many consider “the painful, difficult task” of manual flossing.

Why I like it--clinically proven to be as effective as manual floss, the Waterpik Flosser offers a quick, easy and gentle alternative to manual flossing.  The Flosser generates 10,000 strokes per minute, allowing the single, replaceable, nylon filament tip to remove plaque above and below the gumline.

“Flossing is imperative to not only a person’s oral health, but to their overall well-being,” said Dr. Sebastian Ciancio, an internationally respected periodontist from State University Buffalo of New York.  “One author has calculated that those who floss on a regular basis can potentially add more than six years to their life.”

The Waterpik Flosser is also gentle on gums.  Researchers found that after 30 days, users had significant reductions in plaque buildup and gum irritation, making it ideal for people with braces, crowns, bridges and other dental work.

The Waterpik Flosser is designed with an angled tip that allows for a comfortable grip and easy maneuvering.  Its slender shape (3/4” in diameter, 7” in height) makes it easy to take anywhere

The new Waterpik Flosser will be available at various retail outlets beginning in May,2000

Another thing I like about the company is their sense of humor. They sent me this survey from headquarters.

Top Ten Reasons People Don’t Floss

(Aside From the Obvious)

10.  They actually enjoy bad oral hygiene.
9.   They feel bloody gums are sexy.
8.   They can’t wait to spend countless hours with their dentist.
7.   Who needs teeth anyway?
6.   Dentures are better looking than the real thing.
5.   They like to save a snack for later…in their molars.
4.   They’ve already lost their teeth.
3.   They really can’t use the six extra years flossing provides.
2.   They have a crush on their hygienist.

And the number one thing to do with unused floss…

They want to show others what they had for lunch.

“While the WaterpikTM oral irrigator created our leadership position in the oral healthcare arena for more than 35 years, the Flosser gives us a product to help sustain that position,” said Robert A.  Shortt, general manager for Waterpik Technologies, Inc.’s Personal Healthcare Products.  “Although the majority of households purchase dental floss, very few actually floss on a regular basis.  Many feel that flossing is time consuming, painful and difficult.  Since flossing is vitally important to overall oral health, the Flosser offers an alternative that is quick, easy and more convenient than manual floss, but just as effective.”
