Steam Safari
Ride The Most Luxurious Train In The World To View Africa's Most Famous
Sights
"Epic" is not a word to be used lightly. But it might well be appropriate to describe
a vacation that truly is beyond the ordinary. It is a 19-day trip that incorporates a
8-day ride across Africa in the lap of luxury aboard a fully restored vintage steam train.
This "steam safari" journeys from Victoria Falls to Cape Town, through
Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. It includes the roaring cataracts of Victoria Falls, the
Kapama Private Game Reserve, Kruger National Park, and the romantic Eastern Transvaal. The tour also includes a charter
flight to the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana's unspoiled Okavango Delta, plus an exploration of Cape Town and the nearby
wine country.
The Rovos Rail "Pride of Africa" accommodates only 46 passengers who are catered to 24 hours a day by a staff of
16. Two first-class chefs prepare superb meals accompanied by fine South African wines. Seven pairs of wood pillars
and arches in the dining car create the atmosphere of a private Victorian club, while the windows of the rear
observation car have been enlarged to give travelers a superior view of the spectacular African scenery. Each
suite includes a private bathroom and either twin or double beds.
Surrounded by the Victorian luxury of the Rovos Rail coaches, travelers experience some of the best scenery,
wildlife, culture, food, and hotels Africa has to offer-with ample time to relax, observe, contemplate,
photograph, and discuss ecology, wildlife, and geography.
Tour highlights include a
two night stay at spectacular Victoria Falls, at the elegant Elephant Hills
Inter-Continental Hotel. At Victoria Falls there are the options of a flight over the falls, a round of golf, a
visit to a craft village, tour of a crocodile farm, and a rafting trip. Included is a tour of Victoria Falls, through
the rain forest to vantage points, followed by a sunset cruise, an evening of traditional tribal
dancing.
Other tour highlights include game safaris in Land Rovers and
an overnight stay at Xakanaxa Camp, a luxury tented camp in Botswana's Moremi
Game Reserve; viewing the majestic beauty of Cape Town's Table Mountain,
sometimes shrouded in white clouds known as its "tablecloth;" visiting terraced vineyards dotted with fine
old Cape Dutch houses; and passing by old-fashioned little railway stations built by the British in the early 1900s.
Accommodations include a three night stay in Cape Town at the
luxurious Cape Sun International Hotel and a one night stay at Pretoria's Court
Classique Lodge, in the heart of South Africa's Kapama Private Game Reserve.
This once-in-a-lifetime trip has only one 1999 departure. The tour leaves New York on April 10th,
returning April 29th.
Cost for the 19-day tour is $10,889. Included is round-trip airfare from New York, first class
accommodations, all transfers, full breakfast each day,
other meals as specified in the itinerary, plus all charter flights, tour
excursions, lectures, safari drives, and culture
shows. Three meals a day are served aboard Rovos Rail plus unlimited
drinks and laundry service. Also included in the train segment are sightseeing,
excursions with tour guides, entrance fees for game parks and safari drives, and 24-hour room service.
