SURPRISING
SALT LAKE
by Madelyn Miller
Probably the last place you would expect to find a fantasy
hotel is in Salt Lake City. But they have one of the most unique theme room
hotels in the world. Forty-three different rooms let you live out your fantasy
for a night. Or if you have multiple fantasies, stay several nights in
different rooms.
Located in the old Salt Lake jail
(not my fantasy) which was built in the 1980's, The Anniversary Inn is listed on
the State Historical Ledger.
I chose the 49-ers suite and it made me feel like an
authentic part of the gold rush. My rustic
" log cabin". Although the door to my bathroom looked like an
outhouse, inside was an up-to-date deluxe bathroom. There was huge Jacuzzi with a watering can for a shower
spout. Lanterns lighted the room (but instead of gas, they
were controlled by an elaborate control panel at the side of the bed) I'm sure
the miners probably would have enjoyed the 54-inch surround sound TV and
fireplace as much as I did.
But what makes the Anniversary Inn so special is the
incredible attention to detail. On the wall there were old tools and a
washboard. An upper level platform had an old stove and log table to dine on.
Snacks appear in the refrigerator (I loved the raspberry cheese cake) and a
delicious breakfast is discreetly left outside your room at the time you
requested.
People come for honeymoons, second honeymoons, anniversaries
or just for a unique getaway. All of the rooms have deluxe baths/tubs and huge
TV sets strategically located so the best view is from the bed.
Here are a few of my favorite rooms:
|
LIGHTHOUSE SUITE: $179
Enjoy the adventure of sleeping an East Coast lighthouse.
Some guests say you can actually hear waves crashing against the shoreline. Sleep
in a round bed, explore the waterfall/jetted tub in the sea cave and enjoy the
soothing aquarium over your bed. I loved the idea of looking up and seeing all
the fish swimming over you.
|
 |
|
JACKSON HOLE SUITE: $139
Roughing It takes on a new meaning when you bed down in the
Old West. Sleep in a covered wagon, then mosey into "town" for a good
hot bath.
|
 |
|
NAPOLEON SUITE: $119
Discover the comfort of a Napoleon slight bed and canopy.
This cozy suite comes with an all-marble bathtub where water cascades into the
jetted tub. An imitation fireplace adds charm. And I am sure you won't have to
think about fighting any wars here.
|
 |
|
BRIDAL VEIL FALLS SUITE: $159 & $169 (two different
suites to choose from)
Experience a romantic evening in a lush forest as you sleep
beneath the branches of a maple tree bed. Relax beneath the "fall"
showers as it cascades from the rocks above. No wonder this suite is so popular
with honeymooners.
|
 |
|
CARRIAGE SUITE; $139 & $169 (two different suites to
choose from)
Take a journey through time to old England where you'll find
yourself sleeping in an old-fashioned carriage. Imagine the sounds of hoofbeats
on cobblestones as you relax by the fireplace.

|
|
KAHN MANSION SUITE: $139
Enjoy the sunning elegance of a century old fireplace in
this tradiitional Victorian style suite named for the original owner of the
mansion. Unwind in the marble jetted tub or glass surrounded shower.
And even if you don't stay at the Anniversary Inn, make sure
to join one of the free tours of the rooms every Tuesday and Thursday from
2:30-3:30 PM
