PAWS FOR THOUGHT

by MADELYN MILLER

Thinking of going on vacation or need to take an immediate business trip to New York but don’t want to leave your four-legged friend at home?

If your pet is lucky enough to have an owner who knows about THE WESTBURY on Madison Avenue, you’re both in luck. This sophisticated and elegant English style hotel is your canine companion’s home away from home.

The Westbuy noticed that a larger percentage of people travel with pets. So they set aside a certain number of "pet friendly" rooms for cuddly guests. Often they are treated as members of the family.

After all, why should travelers be obliged to leave their furry side-kick at home or in a kennel when going on a sojourn? Now it is widely known as The place for discriminating pets to stay in New York.

Not only are they welcome, but some of the loyal canines have become attached to a few of The Westbury associates. Jack, the Jack Russell terrier, has been coming to New York’s upper eastside for ten years. Out of the limo within seconds, Jack is soon perched with his paws at the front desk, patiently waiting to check-in…well, let’s really be truthful, to check-out what treat the staff has this time.

A supply of "doggy" snacks are always kept behind the desk for any surprise guests. A few other frequent hairy celebrities are Lily, the golden retriever:

Cappuccino, the "frothy" toy poodle;

Gus, the yellow lab (just like ole’ yeller);

and Pearl , the pug, (yes, a pedigreed pug)

Then there is the perky black lab from N’Awlins named beignet, who belongs to the Executive Vice-President of the Westbury Group in North America, Philip Wood. On Saturdays, you will find the team at work. Pitch, shred, pitch, shred is the sound you may hear and I don’t think you need to guess who’s the shredder of the team.

The Westbury provides all the comforts of home for the traveler and his friend. A "doggy" bag is awaiting their arrival with loads of goodies and necessities for dogs in all shapes and sizes. Items such as a fluffy bed, Pawmat, Pawbowl, Granpaws dog cookies, premium dog food and the dog walker’s pooper scooper (required in New York) doggy deodorizer and a variety of toys. Some hotels don’t even treat their human guests this well.

Talk about anticipating your every need. If you rushed out the door and forgot the leash, the concierge has spare ones at the front desk, and on request, dog sitters are available for walking your dog.

Through the years, The Westbury Hotel has always asked travelers with pets to be extra courteous to the other guests when bringing their dog. They have been lucky in all these years to have had no disturbances or accidents occurring in the lobby, if you know what I mean.

At the Westbury, you will never be in "the dog house"
