YOUR MOTHER WAS RIGHT
YOU SHOULD PUT ON SOMETHING NICE

Recent Fodor's survey reports that travelers
are dressing up for better service

What is the secret to better service when traveling? How can travelers ensure that they will get the attention that they deserve while in the air or on the road? According to a recent nationwide survey of 600 American travelers commissioned by Fodors Travel Publications and conducted by the National Family Opinion Research Group, many travelers are finding that dressing up is the secret to getting the full can of Coke, the cherished up-grade, and individual attention by the hotel staff. In fact, 77% of men and 68% of women who dress up when traveling for business or leisure report that they do so because they find that they get better service.

As the American workplace has gotten more casual and the seat space on airplanes has gotten tighter, travelers began to dress down to be more comfortable. However, most experienced travelers know that in spite of these recent trends, the secret to getting better service is dressing up a bit while on the road. "I never travel without a colorful silk scarf in my carry-on. I never know when I'll need to grab someone's attention and I've found that dressing up even the slightest bit makes service professionals give me the extra consideration that I want. It can make the difference between a so-so travel experience and a great one," comments Bonnie Ammer, President and Publisher of Fodor's Travel Publications.

Aside from service, there are a few other reasons why people dress up when traveling. They include the possibility of meeting someone interesting and the concern of losing their nice clothes with their luggage. 28% of the women and 18% of men report that they dress up because they think that they may meet someone interesting, and 12% of women vs. 9% of men are concerned about losing their nice clothes with their luggage.

So, next time you head out the door for a trip, try dressing up. You're likely to experience a whole new way to travel!
