A Louisville Slugger of Sorts
The New Trendy Drink for the Kentucky Derby
A Short Bulletin by Darryl Beeson
"The Mint Julep Martini is the cocktail for a new generation
of Derby-goers," proclaims Kattie Wallace with Greater Louisville Inc,
Louisville's Chamber of Commerce. "It was founded in Louisville and is being
served at all of this year's Derby parties, in Louisville and beyond." The
most popular Bourbon used in the recipe is their locally produced Maker's
Mark. To be properly prepared for the Kentucky Derby, Saturday, May 3rd,
implement the recipe below: Mint Julep Martini
a splash of orange liqueur
2 1/2 shots bourbon
half shot oz vanilla vodka
half shot oz peppermint schnapps Shake and strain into a
chilled martini glass. Garnish with mint sprigs
and/or an orange twist.
Remember the important rule of thumb for consuming any form
of martini. Drink the first one. Sip the second one. Skip the third one. In
the case of this julep/martini, it was mint to be. Darryl
Beeson, former cellar master of The Mansion on Turtle Creek, knows wine but
enjoys spirits. "I try to be ambidextrous, which is hard to say if you've
been drinking. I would give my right hand to be ambidextrous," says Beeson.
