30 Years and Still Blushing
2003 marks a major milestone for Sutter Home Winery –
the 30th anniversary of the first release of White Zinfandel. Bob Trinchero,
owner of Sutter Home Winery, invented White Zinfandel. Mr. Trinchero was
working on making a more deeply colored, richer flavored red zinfandel wine
by drawing off the free run juice immediately after crushing, to concentrate
the red color and deep flavor of the remaining juice. Mr. Trinchero bottled
the drawn off juice and sold it out of the winery tasting room. For two
years the wine he produced was dry. But a lucky accident during the
fermentation process produced a wine that was slightly sweet, and White
Zinfandel was born.
White Zinfandel skyrocketed in popularity to become the
most popular varietal table wine in America from the mid 1980’s until 1994,
when it was finally surpassed by Chardonnay. In 1994, Mr. Trinchero was
awarded Wine Spectator magazine’s Distinguished Service Award and recognized
for introducing more Americans to the pleasures of drinking wine than anyone
else. It is estimated that there are some 10 million consumers of White
Zinfandel in the United States today. White Zinfandel is a delicious match
for the spicy flavors of BBQ, Asian and Latin cuisines.
