The Ocean Creek Resort
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
By Sheree Bykofsky
Many visitors don’t think of Myrtle Beach as a
year-round destination, but it really is a wonderful place to visit in any
season! In summer, it’s a spectacular sun-and-fun destination; in fall and
winter, the crowds diminish, but the area attractions still abound; and in
spring, the weather begins to warm up, but the crowds are still far away!
And the Ocean Creek Beach Resort in North Myrtle Beach (10600 N. Kings
Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572, 1-800-621-3181,
http://www.oceancreek.com )is fabulous year-round, too. When I was
there, I watched the waves crash onto the beach stopping short of the serene
tidal pools that sit below a meandering boardwalk trail, enjoying the March
surf and calm. Who cares if the beach club doesn’t open till summer? The
lack of crowds will more than make up for the reduction of facilities.
With a wide variety of accommodations, one might expect
anything from a room overlooking the beach to a splendid condo with a full
kitchen and quiet porch or balcony or a room overlooking the beach. Enjoy a
bike ride on the vast property or a walk on the sand.
If relaxing is what you’re after, there’s no shortage
of activities here. Myrtle Beach’s middle name is “Golf,” and so if the golf
shoes fit, wear them! Never golfed? You will, after a lesson at the
Litchfield Golf Course or one of the other world-class courses in the area,
like the River Club or the Willbrook Plantation Golf Club. If you love
tennis, you won’t even have to leave the resort: Ocean Creek offers eight
beautiful courts, where you can even take lessons.
Or explore the many fun sites in the area. The
sprawling Barefoot Landing (http://www.bflanding.com)
is a dandy place to stop and stroll. Plus it’s packed with specialty shops,
restaurants, and entertainment to suit any taste. Pet an alligator at The
Alligator Adventure: The Reptile Capital of the World (Highway 17, North
Myrtle Beach, 843-361-0789.
http://www.alligatoradventure.com ), a really cool reptile zoo. Or catch
some country music any night of the week at the House of Blues, which often
features big-name entertainers and its own productions.
Downtown Myrtle Beach is Las Vegas for teens – arcades,
Ripley’s attractions, bright neon light, a teen disco. Adults might enjoy a
stroll past the attractions and an ice cream cone, too. And if you love
malls, the Coastal Grand just opened this year, and the Broadway on the
Beach is an unusual boardwalk mall with a Planet Hollywood, IMAX theatre,
and more.
Myrtle Beach is the perfect place to relax, whether
you’re with your family, on a romantic trip for two, or making a solo
getaway.
