In Arizona, Spring is for Sports Fanatics!
Arizona is the perfect spring destination for athletes
and sports fans alike. Besides being the Spring Training home to 12 Major
League Baseball (MLB) teams, the Grand Canyon State also hosts several other
exciting spring sporting events.
Phoenix is home to several professional and semi-professional sports teams,
three of which play in the spring. The American Football League (AFL)
Arizona Rattlers and National Basketball Association (NBA) Phoenix Suns both
call America West Arena home. The arena’s convenient location in downtown
Phoenix is within walking distance of dining, nightlife and entertainment.
The National Hockey League (NHL) Phoenix Coyotes and National Lacrosse
League (NLL) Arizona Sting will be playing at their new arena in Glendale
beginning in December 2003. Both teams’ schedules coincide with Cactus
League Spring Training. The National Football League’s (NFL) Arizona
Cardinals are building a new state-of-the-art football stadium next to the
Glendale Arena that will be ready for the 2006 season and will host the 2008
Super Bowl.
Arizona’s spring climate is also perfect for golf and tennis tournaments.
The Arizona Men’s Tennis Championships are featuring U.S. Open Champion Andy
Roddick at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, March 1-7. The Ladies
Professional Golf Association (LPGA) will hold two tournaments in Arizona
during Marchthe Welch’s/Fry’s Championship at Randolph/Dell Urich Golf
Course in Tucson, March 13-16 and the Safeway PING tournament at Moon Valley
Country Club in Phoenix, March 20-23.
College sports fans can cheer on Arizona State University’s Sun Devils
basketball team or watch the first round of the NCAA Women’s basketball
tournament in Tempe. The University of Arizona’s Wildcats basketball teams
also shoot hoops in Tucson.
Those who have a need for speed will love the fast-paced atmosphere of the
Indy Racing/Copper World race at Phoenix International Speedway in Avondale
and the Phoenix Bikefest Euro Motorcycle Race at Firebird International
Raceway in Chandler. For those who like to create their own speed, the
Valley of the Sun Marathon takes runners on a path throughout Mesa.
So, plan to stay for a few more days and experience the additional sports
excitement. Arizona is a sports fan’s paradise in the spring!
