Soft Adventure Vacation

Rocky Mountaineer Railtours

The new for 2004 “Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet” vacation offers up-close grizzly bear
and wildlife viewing on a luxurious independent package tour

The exotic 11-night/12-day “Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet” vacation from Rocky Mountaineer Railtours is a wildlife lover’s dream offering exhilarating viewing of some of North America's most impressive creatures--grizzly bears, black bears, eagles and orca whales. The tours depart three times weekly both eastbound (from Vancouver) and westbound (from Calgary), beginning May 1 through Oct. 7, 2004.

The “Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet” package combines travel on the acclaimed two-day, all-daylight Rocky Mountaineer train journey with a visit to the unspoiled wilderness of British Columbia’s northwest.  Guests spend three nights at the intimate Knight Inlet Lodge located in Glendale Cove, home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly bears in British Columbia. It is not uncommon for up to 40 bears to be active within a few miles of the lodge during peak fall season, as they fish for salmon in the Glendale River.

While staying in the rustic, yet luxurious accommodations at the floating Knight Inlet Lodge, guests can choose to participate in a host of soft adventure activities such as scenic boat rides, interpretive hiking, wildlife tracking, eagle viewing and guided kayak trips.

“The ‘Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet’ tour is the kind of vacation memories are made of,” says James Terry, Executive V.P. and C.O.O.  “Whether watching from boats or from special viewing platforms, our guests are able to get remarkably close to these amazing animals, in a safe, natural environment.”  There are distinct seasons in which to view grizzly bears in their native habitat:  Spring is a wonderful time to see newborn cubs; summer has the best weather and is the most relaxing time; while fall is action-packed, as grizzlies feed on thousands of pink salmon to prepare for the coming winter.

Following the exciting adventures at Knight Inlet Lodge, guests relax in comfort and luxury onboard Rocky Mountaineer’s two-day journey to Banff in the Canadian Rockies.  Traveling in GoldLeaf Service, guests enjoy spectacular panoramic views from the fully glass-domed coach, and descend the spiral staircase to dine on freshly prepared, bi-regional a la carte cuisine in the private dining room.

The “Grizzly Bears of Knight Inlet” vacation package includes overnight deluxe accommodation stays in Vancouver, Campbell River,Knight Inlet Lodge, Banff and Calgary; return flights to Campbell River and Knight Inlet; activities and meals at Knight Inlet Lodge; a four-hour, private limousine tour of Vancouver; tour of Banff and Lake Louise by private car; and private transfers to and from airports. The vacation package is priced from US $5,599 per person, based on double occupancy.
