Savoring Swan Court
By Madelyn Miller, the Travellady
I arrived early and sat at a window table, admiring the
picturesque view of the setting sun and enjoying the delightful live background
music.
Why, I wondered, hadn’t I tried this romantic restaurant
sooner. Why hadn’t I come here with my lover who loved food almost as much as I
do?
Instead I sat in this delightful setting reminiscing on a
romance gone wrong. The good food and friendship of a dear friend cheered my
body and soul. She enjoyed Swan Court as much as I did and was eager to bring
her husband back. (and lovingly took him a doggie bag—should we say husband
bag—of much of the huge piece of chocolate Mousse cake that even the two of us
could not finish)
Next time I go, and I am sure there will be a next time, I
hope to have a significant other to share the place with.
And I will know exactly what to order. Both salads we tried
were fresh and crispy—the spinach salad ($7) with baby spinach, sliced apples,
bacon, goat cheese and walnuts in a honey maple dressing, and the seasonal salad
($5) a fresh garden salad with pine nuts and a wonderful sherry vinaigrette.
The only disappointment was the feta brushcetta ($7) which
had a soggy base. The menu described it as sliced baguette rubbed with garlic
and extra-virgin olive-oil, then toasted with fresh basil, roma tomato, feta
cheese and Kalamata olive. But it did not seem toasted to us—and even the two of
us did not finish the shared order.
But on to better things—and everything else was memorable.
I tasted my companion’s pecan encrusted snapper ($18) baked and served with
apple, onion and garlic relish. Would mine be as good as hers I wondered? Every
bit, I discovered when I tried the perfectly prepared Tournedos Swan Court ($22)
a grilled tenderloin with Madeira and béarnaise sauce.
We really did not need dessert after this delicious meal,
but in the spirit of research, we forged ahead. I loved my Swan Court rendition
Bananas Foster which had a creamy caramel sauce on the bananas and some
strawberries surrounding the vanilla ice cream.
I helped my companion with the white and dark chocolate
mousse cake but could not even finish half of the generous serving.
Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food and
the charming setting. Swan Court also does banquets.
The restaurant is nestled back from the road, and not so
easy to find, even though it is just off Central Expressway, between Renner and
Campbell on the west side of the highway in the US Data Building. Call for
specific directions if you are not familiar with the area.
