GATHER 'ROUND THE FIRE

THE GREAT OUTDOORS NEVER TASTED SO GOOD

Edited by Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady

$10,000 Grand Prize Will be Awarded to America's Favorite Outdoor Chef in the Redwood Creek® Wines Campfire Classic

My favorite part of camping is eating. If I drink enough wine, I forget about the mosquitos, bugs, and snakes.

Whether slow-cooking steak kebabs under the Great Smoky Mountain stars, flipping flapjacks under a canopy of Yosemite sequoias, stirring a pot of chili alongside of the Appalachian Trail, or grilling fresh caught trout on the banks of the Colorado River, Redwood Creek wines recognizes that preparing a fine meal in the great outdoors is always enhanced by a panoramic view and glass of flavorful wine.

For those who appreciate the timeless art of campfire cookery, who crave the smell of herbs wafting up from a glowing pit, and who believe the best meal they've ever enjoyed was in a remote log cabin, Redwood Creek has a culinary challenge for you.

To rediscover and celebrate the flavors and traditions behind meals enjoyed alfresco, Redwood Creek is calling on America's amateur cast-iron chefs and outdoor enthusiasts to enter the second national Redwood Creek Campfire Classic . This year, one finalist from each of the five regions—Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast—will compete in a cook-off to earn the title of America's Campfire Classic Champion.

Back by popular demand, the Redwood Creek Campfire Classic will invite five talented cooks to New York City to prepare their gourmet recipes over a campfire for a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize and a $5,000 donation to their favorite national park. The public will also be invited to cast their votes online for a $1,000 People's Choice Award.

Until  May 15th 2007, amateur outdoor cooking aficionados can log on to RedwoodCreek.com to enter their unique campfire recipe, paired with one of the rich and flavorful Redwood Creek wines. Entries will be judged on the originality, presentation and creativity of the recipe; taste and ingredients representative of the region; advancement of the tradition of campfire cookery; and the appropriateness of the wine pairing.

The following campfire cooking methods are acceptable in the Redwood Creek Campfire Classic : Dutch oven, skillet, skewers, cast-iron grill, spit and foil-wrapped meal placed directly over coals. Five "campicureans" will travel to New York City all expenses paid, to participate in the Campfire Classic on the first day of summer, June 21, 2007.

A panel of culinary and camping experts—including a well-known campfire chef and Redwood Creek Winemaker Cal Dennison, an avid outdoorsman and an accomplished campsite cook in his own right—will narrow down all applicants to the top five regional finalists and select the grand prizewinner at the Campfire Classic. For those headed to the trails this summer, the finalists' recipes will be posted on www.RedwoodCreek.com  as an inspiration for going gourmet in the great outdoors.

"I've been preparing fresh-caught fish over a campfire in the Sierra Mountains for as long as I can remember," Dennison says. "After a long hike or strenuous day rafting, I find nothing's better than opening a stream-chilled bottle of my favorite wine."

Redwood Creek encourages outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy campfire cookery, but to always take heed of safety precautions. Before cooking over a campfire, it's necessary to check with local regulations about campfire bans and restrictions. Additional campfire cooking safety tips and delicious recipes are available on www.RedwoodCreek.com

Redwood Creek wines embody the unique spirit of California. Winemaker Cal Dennison has crafted this portfolio of seven food-friendly wines to consistently deliver outstanding quality at an attractive price. Redwood Creek wines are available at retailers nationwide at a suggested retail price ranging from $6.99 to $9.99.
