MALTZ MUSEUM TO SHOW
MASTERPIECES OF EUROPEAN PAINTING
A selection of masterworks from The Cleveland Museum of Art
(CMA) will be on view at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, opening March 29,
2007 and running through July 8, 2007.
 Masterpieces
of European Painting from The Cleveland Museum of Art brings together 18 of the
finest paintings from CMA's permanent collection, including work from the
Renaissance through Romanticism by world renowned artists, including Rembrandt,
Rubens and Turner. Since the closure of the CMA's main galleries, these
paintings have not been on view to the public. The high quality of the works on
loan to the Maltz Museum will give visitors a glimpse of how exciting it will be
when the CMA reopens its Old Master Painting Galleries in mid-2008.
 Each
carefully selected painting in the exhibition reflects its creator's meditations
on the human condition, told in a distinctive manner. They explore universal and
important topics like challenges in faith, human suffering, mental and physical
frailty, maternal love and human powerlessness against the forces of nature.
A smaller version of this show recently ran at The Frick
Collection in New York. It comes to Cleveland with an added grouping put
together exclusively for the Maltz Museum. The special traveling exhibition is
one of several mounted by the CMA as a way to make these beloved paintings
available to the public while the Museum is closed for its $258 million
renovation and construction project.
 "This
is an extremely important show that complements many of the same themes we
examine in our permanent exhibition," said Judi Feniger, executive director,
Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. "It is a privilege to exhibit a portion of
CMA's collection at our Museum."

two of Northeast Ohio's finest cultural and educational institutions to present
a powerful exhibition," said Timothy Rub, CMA director. "We are thrilled to
partner with the Maltz Museum and look forward to showing this unique and most
important collection of our masterworks to a wide audience in our home town."
