Uptown Players Presents the Regional Premiere of Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels
edited by Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady
Uptown Players continues
its ninth season with the regional premiere of the musical comedy, Dirty
Rotten Scoundrels, at the historic Kalita Humphreys Theater, former home of
the Dallas Theater Center.
Based on the popular 1988 MGM film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on
two con men living on the French Riviera – the suave and sophisticated
Lawrence Jameson (Bob Hess), who makes his lavish living by talking rich
ladies out of their money and a small-time crook named Freddy Benson (Jimmy
Hays Nelson), who, more humbly, swindles women by waking their compassion
with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. When it
becomes apparent that the Riviera isn't big enough for the both of them,
they make a winner-take-all wager over the fortunes of a naďve American soap
heiress (Catherine Carpenter Cox). The first one to "clean her out" can make
the other clear out and keep the Riviera and its unsuspecting tourists to
himself. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences
laughing, humming and guessing to the end.
The cast also features Lon D. Barrera as Andre, Noelle Stanley as Muriel,
and Marqui Maresca and features an ensemble that includes Sergio Antonio
Garcia, Katharine Gentsch, Michelle Hames, Carlos Gomez, Whitney Hennen,
Drew Kelly, Jessica Maxey, Kelly McCain, Jason Moody, Dana Taylor, and
Thomas Renner. The production is under the direction of Cheryl Denson,
with choreography by Vicki Squires and musical direction by Scott A. Eckert.
The production runs April 23 through May 16, 2010, with shows at 8 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. There is no matinee April 25, but
there is an added performance at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 13. Performances
take place at the Kalita Humphreys Theater, 3636 Turtle Creek Blvd (entrance
off Blackburn), Dallas, TX 75219. Tickets are $30-40 and can be
purchased online at www.uptownplayers.org or
by phone at (214) 219-2718.
Uptown Players made the move to the historic Kalita Humphreys Theater in
January and will now be presenting its entire 2010 season in this larger
venue. The remaining productions include the regional premiere of Paul
Rudnick’s comedy Regrets Only, and the hysterical parody Forbidden
Broadway’s Greatest Hits, along with the U.S. premiere of the Pet Shop Boys
musical Closer to Heaven. For more information, visit www.uptownplayers.org.
