World's Largest Halloween Street Party
Planned
City of 36,000 Expected to Ascend to Status of “6th Largest California
City” on Halloween Night
Anticipating 450,000 revelers on Halloween night in
2003, Southern Californians and visitors should expect the world's largest
Halloween street party yet, on October 31st in West Hollywood, California.
The 16th Annual West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is expected to draw so
many, that the City would grow in population by over 12 times and would
displace the City of Fresno as California’s 6th largest city for a matter of
hours on Halloween night.
News broadcasters proclaimed last year's Carnaval, "the
largest Halloween street party in the world," after over 400,000 filled less
than a one-mile stretch of the historic "Route 66," Santa Monica Boulevard
in West Hollywood. The Carnaval, which has been increasing in size by
increments of 50,000 during the last three years, credits the increases to
an expanded list of celebrity and musical appearances. Last year, pop star
Pink and Latin sensation Paulina Rubio drew big numbers, while famous
choreographer and now host of the TV series “Fame” on NBC, Debbie Allen, was
crowned "Queen of the Carnaval."
"The bar has been raised even higher," says Bradley
Burlingame, President & CEO of the West Hollywood Convention & Visitors
Bureau, a co-promoter of the event. The Carnaval has recently caught the
attention of Hollywood producers, allowing Burlingame and the City of West
Hollywood to proceed with negotiations that could lead to the telecasting of
the event.
West Hollywood is no stranger to big crowds. Although
the city’s population ranks among one of the smallest in Los Angeles County,
at fewer than 36,000 people, and highest in density, with only 1.9 square
miles in its possession, its events and nightlife are famous for drawing
people in large numbers. On weekends, the city swells to about 72,000, as
people from all over Southern California and the world descend on the Sunset
Strip and Santa Monica Boulevard, two of the most-desired epicenters of LA
nightlife.
The West Hollywood Convention & Visitors Bureau is a
501-C-6 non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the economic vitality
of West Hollywood through the marketing of the City of West Hollywood as a
premier travel and lifestyle destination.
