Look Mom, I made it Myself

My Classy, Glassy Souvenir

By Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady

I always wanted to be a writer. And I am very happy with my career. But every so often I fantasize what else I might have done with my life. Be a jewelry designer. A chocolatier. A personal shopper. A glass maker.

I have always been fascinated by glass and perhaps there is some genetic predisposition to it. When I was growing up my mother had a kiln and made ceramics. Her craft area was strictly off-limits and considered very dangerous. Now I understand the wisdom of an off-limits craft area. But I found it much easier to be a glass artist in the safe confines of Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. Everything I needed was right there and completely supervised.

Obviously the glass making fantasy is not uniquely mine. Every day, dozens of lucky people get to act out this fantasy at the Corning Museum of Glass in their hands-on Glassmaking Experience.

The walk-in workshop is conveniently located in the Studio The Corning Museum of Glass. You can choose your art form—if you sign up for glass forming and glassblowing you can blow a holiday ornament ($18), form a flower ($18)or create a Roman bottle.($24).

Everyone admires my flower, but no one really believes that I made it myself. And of course I did have a real glass maker right at my side explaining and encouraging every step of the way.

Although the end result is fabulous and there is a great sense of achievement, it is a little bit like learning to do oil painting from a paint by number kit. If you want to be able to do it yourself, you would need an in-depth workshop. The Corning Museum of Glass offers day and week long classes in every aspect of glass making if you want to get into more advanced techniques and projects.

If you are expecting instant gratification, you will probably have to wait for the glass to go through an annealing process and your treasure will not be available for same-day pickup, but it can be shipped to you.

Please do not hold your breathe. I will not be making glass flowers for my holiday list this year. But I would be happy to go back to the Glassmaking Experience and learn how to make bead with flame work or sandblast glass.

Sparkling lakes, breathtaking waterfalls and rolling pastoral land dominate the landscape of the Finger Lakes Wine Region. Over thousands of years, gigantic glaciers and coursing streams carved this landscape shared by generations of people. During the past million years, giant glaciers covered New York State several times, dramatically transforming the land in its path.

Watkins Glen State Park
Located a short distance south of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen State Park is one of 26 facilities of the Finger Lakes State Parks Region. It features a spectacular narrow gorge where you can hike alongside Glen Creek past deep pools, water-sculpted rocks and waterfalls. You can experience the park’s rich scenery along hiking trails in and above the gorge, at scenic picnic areas, or at the park’s Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Within two miles, the glen’s stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge.

Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catharine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout. Climbing on the tail is moderately rigorous ¾ of the way up. Wide paths make return easy, at any point.

MADELYN’S MOST FAVORITE PLACE IN FINGER LAKES WINE REGION
Skyland Farm is more than a store—it is an art gallery, a restaurant, a garden, a children’s play area and an absolute must-see for any visitor to the area. Check the hours. The opening times are quirky and unpredictable. (http://www.skylandfarm.net/skylandfarm/).

MOST UNIQUE SPA EXPERIENCE
Most spas are at luxury resorts. This is one of the few I have encountered at a camping ground. And not only will your body feel good after a treatment, but your soul will soar with the knowledge that part of your fee will be contributed to their charity Wellness G.I.F.T.S. which hosts treatments for those with disabilities.
