Lagniappe in Louisiana

Fun for the Whole Family

In the olden days in South Louisiana, merchants would give their customers “lagniappe” (lan-yap) meaning, a little something extra.  Lagniappe was anything from glassware to an extra doughnut in a baker’s dozen.  Thankfully for travelers today, lagniappe is still considered tradition in New Orleans and now the Chateau Sonesta Hotel and Audubon Nature Institute are partnering to offer guests of the hotel a little Louisiana lagniappe.

Children checking in with their parents receive a welcome bag that is filled with goodies such as crayons, a coloring book, playing cards and Mardi Gras beads.  They will also receive a flier with a special coupon offer to any of Audubon’s facilities including: Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Zoo and Louisiana Nature Center.

“We are offering parents the opportunity to buy an adult ticket and get a child’s ticket free to any of our attractions,” explains Chimene Grant Connor, Director of Advertising for Audubon Nature Institute.  “We are delighted to establish this partnership with the Chateau Sonesta Hotel because they are known for their family-friendly atmosphere and of course, our attractions are quite popular among families.”

“We have been exploring ways to make the guest experience more memorable, especially for those traveling with children,” explains Al Groos, Vice President and General Manager of the Chateau Sonesta Hotel.  As Groos adds, “This is a win-win situation for everyone. Traveling can be expensive so anything we can do to offer parents some discount will obviously be helpful. At the same time, we know we are referring them to parks and museums that they will thoroughly enjoy.”

New Orleans is gaining recognition as the top family vacation destination in the United States.  “There was a time when New Orleans was known as a playground for adults only.  This is no longer the case and I believe our partnership with Audubon Nature Institute highlights that.  They have several venues that are not only entertaining, but educational for everyone in the family and that makes a difference when parents are deciding on a vacation destination,” Groos adds.

Connor, who also serves as Chair of the Board of the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network, could not agree more.  “We are excited about this recognition and are working hard to keep the momentum going.  Audubon has been at the forefront of creating family destinations for 120 years and we will continue to provide that for our community, our region and our country.”

Convenience was a consideration in this partnership.  The Chateau Sonesta is located just blocks away from the aquarium, well within a comfortable walking distance for families.  As for the zoo, it is just up river a few miles and can be easily reached by streetcar or riverboat.  In order to use this special coupon offer, all parents need to do is present the flier to the ticket office of the facility they wish to visit.  Fliers will be given to the parents upon check-in, with additional fliers available at the Concierge Desk for those families wishing to visit more than one of Audubon Nature Institute’s facilities.

More About the Hotel

The Chateau Sonesta Hotel is within steps of world-famous restaurants, antique shops, jazz clubs and premier tourist attractions. The pre-Civil War structure was formerly the D.H. Holmes Department Store, which operated for more than 150 years in New Orleans before being converted into a luxury hotel.  The property’s unique guest rooms each offer views of one of three courtyards, including a landscaped pool patio and the French Quarter.  The Chateau Sonesta also offers rooms and suites with balconies overlooking Bourbon Street.  Ralph Brennan’s Redfish Grill is connected to the hotel.
