OTHER THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH RUM BESIDES MAKE PUNCH

Tortuga Rum Recipes – a Taste of the Islands
Christopher
Columbus named the Cayman Islands Las Tortugas, meaning “the turtles”, for the
many tortoises found on their sandy shores. He also is credited with introducing
sugar cane to the New World. Soon, the islands growing cane were making rum from
fermented sugar cane residue.
From the days of pirates and Gallion ships, rum has fueled
history – sparking rebellion, a spirit of festivity and sensuous tropical
pleasures. Yet the tiny Caymans grew little sugar cane, and would wait hundreds
of years for rums of their own.
In 1984 an enterprising young couple, Robert and Carlene
Hamaty, started the Tortuga Rum Company, introducing the Cayman’s first private
labels rums. Special blends of Jamaican and Barbados rums make Tortuga Rums like
no others – a unique product especially for the Caymans that evokes thoughts of
the islands’ tropical breezes, white sandy beaches and breathtaking blue ocean
views. Long a popular souvenir of Island visitors, Tortuga Rum now is available
in the USA.
And yes, this family-owned Cayman company also makes those
world-famous Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes. Enjoy a Taste of the Cayman Islands
with these tropical drinks:
