Historical and Hip: Palm Springs’ Hot Historical Inns
Edited by Jennifer L. Price
It’s hot, it’s hip, and it’s happenin’! Everything old is
new again and that’s especially true in Palm Springs, California where today’s
“A List” celebrate vintage and stay in some of the top boutique inns with some
of the most unique histories.
There’s the Andalusian Court where it is said that “Little
Ricky” Arnaz first learned to walk. This 1920s adobe-style inn is state-of-the
art when it comes to luxury but reminiscent of the past with its seven villas
with fireplaces and private courtyards. Then there’s The Willows where Albert
Einstein mingled with Gable and Lombard in a 1924 property that exudes class.
Built right against Palm Springs famous mountains, the breath taking panoramas
are second only to the well-appointed sleeping and public rooms.
In
a city recognized world-wide for its Mid Century Modern architecture, it is only
fitting that the historic inns of Palm Springs represent the best in desert
design where the adobe style of such hotels as Casa Cody stand side-by-side with
the classic designs of the 40s and 50s. Stay at the Del Marcos, designed by architect William Cody, winner of the
Palm Springs Modern Committee’s 2005 Design Preservation Award and be swept back
in time. The Albert Frey designed Movie Colony Hotel is another luxury property
the likes of which can only be found in Palm Springs. The Triangle Inn was
designed by Hugh M. Kaptur who also designed the William Holden House.
It’s a Palm Springs tradition to stay at one of the unique
inns and hotels. The stars of the silent pictures did, the Rat Pack did, and
today’s Hollywood hotties have rediscovered why it’s always in to be in Palm
Springs.
