I left my purse in New York
By Madelyn Miller
Do not panic. I did not forget it or loose it. I just
realized that with my new Scottevest jacket I could do without it. The
jacket has zillions of pockets in all the right places, plus some secret
pockets that made me feel perfectly safe to leave my money inside the coat.
It was a totally liberating moment, or actually week when I went around with
no purse.
I
kept my keys and Metrocard in one pocket, my gloves in another. There are 12
ergonomically designed pockets that create a capacity of 938 Sq. inches
(which is enough for all my stuff and some of the new acquisitions). It took
me a few days to remember where I had put things—a problem similar to one I
have with my purse)
But the moment when I knew I really had a winner was
when my son’s friend Josh came over to visit and noticed my new coat. “Cool
coat,” he said to my son. My son explained that it was not his coat, but
actually mine. “Cool Mom,” observed Josh. That was the first time a
thirty-something guy thought my clothes were cool. Maybe this should be
marketed as the jacket to attract adventurous, techno-savy, thirty-something
men. The $129.99 cost is a lot better value than three months of
cyber-dating Match sites. I did not attract one rich younger man doing that
The jacket doesn’t just look good, it feels good
because it is made of a warm, fuzzy poly fleece that kept me warm even on a
chilly New York day.
The only problem was when I went to lunch in an upscale
New York restaurant, they practically insisted on checking it. I panicked!
What would I do, unload all the pockets and put the stuff in a doggy bag to
carry to the table? Or pretend there was nothing valuable in the pockets,
and pray no one looked?
What could be better
The only thing I wished for was a hood on the rainy
days. But the front pocket was big enough for my folding umbrella so that
almost solved the problem. And there are other pieces that combine with my
fleece jacket that have a hood.
Traveler’s Tip
The ScotteVest is useful when you go through security
in an airport. Instead of emptying your pockets, you just take it off. That
saves a lot of time. This also saves space in your luggage, because your
jacket is not included in your carry-on..but you can stash a lot of gear in
the pockets.
After I fell in love with the jacket, I spoke with the
owner. He told me the big back inside pocket where I stashed my money was
actually the CamelBak waster hydration system holder.
I guess I used this jacket all wrong, but it worked
well for me.
