Swing To A Nostalgic Beat In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
By Melody Schubert
Swinging To A Classic Southern Beat
The dance style called the Swing has changed since the
peak of its popularity during the 1940's. The Big bands of the time defined
the sound of Swing and gained a loyal fan base throughout the country.
Performances by these bands were often broadcast live on location in hotel
lounges, country clubs, college campuses, and ballrooms. This was a time
when bandleaders like Count Basie tossed aside the traditional baton and
played along fellow band mates on stage.
Natives
of the Southern states enjoy the Carolina Shag, the state dance of South
Carolina. Many dancers say the Carolina Shag began around in the 1940’s when
Rhythm and Blues Bands played at local beaches and clubs in the Myrtle
Beach. Shag dancers glide across the dance floor rather than bounce as those
who enjoy the East Coast Swing. Compared to the West Coast Swing, the Shag
is danced at a steady and relaxed pace.
During a recent visit to South Carolina my husband and
I stopped at Fat Harold’s Beach Club located in North Myrtle Beach at 212
Main Street. We came for the lively music and to catch a personal glimpse of
a South Carolina tradition. While we didn’t find our groove many couples on
the dance floor amazed us with their smooth moves. Our visit proved the
Swing is popular everywhere, and that with a few lessons anyone can enjoy an
evening dancing to a nostalgic beat.
Fat Harold’s Beach Club is open Monday – Sunday from
4:00pm - 2:00am when Shag dancers of all ages take to the floor. Wednesday
evenings are a great time to visit when Fat Harold’s holds a Customer
Appreciation night with various Specials. Free Shag Lessons are held on
Tuesday's when Rookie Shaggers can compete for Cash and Prizes. New Shag
Classes by Judy Duke cost $40.00, and begin 1st Thursday of every month at
7pm and run weekly. Fat Harold's Beach Club located in North Myrtle Beach at
212 Main Street in South Carolina. To find out more about visiting Fat
