Think Pink for the Holidays

Giving gifts that give back

By Madelyn Miller, the TravelLady

This story is dedicated to all women challenged by breast cancer, but especially my cousins Saralee, Nancy, and friends Liz and Gabrielle.

At the season when everyone is thinking of gift giving, what greater gift is there than good health. And prevention is so much easier than curing.

So I decided to start a list of all the gift items that benefited breast cancer to make it easier for everyone to help.

Jewelry

A sterling silver Breast Cancer Awareness double strand bracelet created by Lis J Lehmann is a a StudioJewel original handcrafted design.  $50.00($5.00 for each bracelet sold will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation) order from616.447.0333   www.studiojewel.com

Another sterling silver bracelet (with etched ribbon) was created to benefit the ESSCO-MGH Breast Cancer Research Fund at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.  One hundred percent of the money raised by our fund, goes directly to breast cancer research. Not one penny is taken off the top for administrative purposes.  To date, the fund has grown to $2.3 million.  All for research.

The bracelets are $100.  Checks can be made payable to:  The ESSCO-MGH Breast Cancer Research Fund 1-800-635-3899

Pink Wrist Bracelets

A pink wrist bracelet is one way  to support  breast cancer research by helping the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. Dr. Susan Love is a well-known author and leading expert on breast cancer research who has been called a “founding mother” of the breast advocacy movement.

The Foundation offers pink bracelets for $5, with all proceeds going to support its research and advocacy efforts. The “Love’s Army” bracelet is one of the first pink bracelets and also one of the only bracelets that donates almost all proceeds directly to prevention research.

A Step Towards the Cure

A great product on the market that benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation is the pink Susan G. Komen certified Digital Pedometer from Oregon Scientific.    Recent studies show taking 10,000 steps a day aids in lowering body fat, boosting energy levels and decreasing health risks.  Walking is also probably the best exercise to start losing permanent weight.  Individuals only take an average of 300 to 900 steps a day, so pedometers are a great way to be aware of one’s personal activity level and take charge in achieving fitness goals.

The Oregon Scientific pedometer features a large digital LCD display, adjustable sensitivity level, and includes a battery.  Through March 31, 2006, Oregon Scientific will donate $1.00 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for each pink pedometer sold.

Driving Towards the Cure

In an effort to raise more money for the Komen Foundation, BMW developed a special collection of lifestyle accessory items that are badged with the Ultimate Drive logo.  Called The Pink Ribbon Collection.  The collection includes clothing, tote bags and other accessory items.  Eighty percent of the cost of each item is donated to the Komen Foundation.  Since the creation of this collection, BMW has been able to donate over $400,000.00 to the Komen Foundation, in addition to the million dollars raised each year through the Ultimate Drive program.

Recipes for the Cure

Tami Agassi co-authored a beautiful collection of celebrity recipes to benefit breast cancer. Tami has an amazing story. At the age of 30, she was diagnosed with breast cancer with no family history of the disease. Just six months later, her mother was also diagnosed. With support from a wonderful network of doctors as well as friends and family, Tami and her mother are now living cancer free.

Today, Tami is using her experience to help others and is passionate about finding a cure. She works tirelessly for her oncologist (who lost his own wife to ovarian cancer), serving as the Executive Director of the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research.

Tami and some of the most beloved celebrities in fashion, politics, sports, music, TV and film are asking the public's help in the fight against breast and ovarian cancer -- two of the most dangerous cancers that affect women today. To do so, Agassi and her celebrity friends have created "Star Palate," a beautifully-styled and photographed cookbook full of nearly 80 recipes. Many are straight from the kitchens of superstars such as Celine Dion, Katie Couric, Chris Evert, Elizabeth Hurley and Kelly Preston. Other celebs who have pitched in for the cause include Robin Williams, Mia Hamm, Dr. Phil, Clint Black, Anna Kournikova and, of course, Andre Agassi. One hundred percent of the proceeds from sales go directly to breast and ovarian cancer research.

A Brilliant New Way to Keep Track of Your Cell Phone and help find a Cure

After one too many missed calls, due to digging around in her Marc Jacobs bag, and after one too many lost cell phones, newbie inventor Mary Bennett created an accessory that is functional, chic and a simple “why didn’t I think of that” item.

Paris Hilton was just spotted on Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight using a TechTetherÔ— a beaded leash for your cell that attaches it to your handbag.  And shoppers in chic spots like on El Paseo in Palm Desert and in Sun Valley have been snatching them up.  10% of the proceeds of Style TT9, a pink crystal and pearl TechTether, goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Fund.

TechTether is available at a number of fine retailers including Fred Segal and  Nordstrom and on-line at www.Nordstrom.com . Check out all the TechTether styles at www.techtether.com

Given Nearly 70 percent of WorldWinner’s players are female and more than half of them between the ages of 25 and 54 (this is a subset of the 40 million women who comprise the female online games population), the Komen Foundation was a natural partner for WorldWinner.

Each time WorldWinner players compete in select Compete for Pink tournaments, which are listed on the WorldWinner site, WorldWinner donates 10 percent of the entry fees collected to the Komen Foundation to support research and outreach programs.  Also, for every consumer who creates a free WorldWinner account, WorldWinner will donate $1.00 to the Komen Foundation.  Additional details of the program can be found at www.worldwinner.com/komen.
