Baby it’s cold outside

Winter vacationing in Hawaii

By Marilyn Loeser

“The weather outside is frightful,” the song goes. And so it is: frigid temperatures, ice, sleet, snow. Many winter vacationers opt for the ski slopes, but if you’re like me, you just want to be warm again!

How about Hawaii?

At the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on the island of Hawaii, you can wade into oceanfront tide pools and visit with gentle sea turtles, stroll through gardens for a lesson in native trees, flowers and foliage, and discover the tales and legends of Hawaii's past.

Here you'll also find a replica of King David Kalakaua's beach cottage and the remains of three heiau, ancient Hawaiian temples.

Located on the Kona Coast, resort amenities include Kalona Spa, tennis courts and Kamaaina Terrace restaurant. The resort is next to Kahaluu Bay Beach Park, excellent for snorkeling and surfing, and nearby is the 36-hole golf course — Kona Country Club.

Special resort packages are offered throughout the year. The Hot Lava Cool Daze package is being offered over the next 12 months and includes a minimum of three nights accommodations, one car entrance pass to the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, daily breakfast for two and a pair of Lava Flow drinks at the Verandah Lounge. A rental car also can be added to the package price.

Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park features two of the most active volcanoes on the planet, as well as dramatic landscapes of land in its infancy, formed from molten lava flowing from deep within the earth. The park offers fascinating insights into how the Hawaiian Islands were formed, and serves as an important refuge for native plants and animals.

The park illustrates the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration and evolution — processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with unique ecosystems.

If you go:

The “Hot Lava Cool Daze” three-night package is priced at $597 for an ocean view room, $657 for deluxe ocean view and $747 for deluxe ocean front. Additional nights may be added at Outrigger’s Best Available Rate.

The package is based on double occupancy, is valid from December 22, 2006, to December 21, 2007, and is subject to availability, change and applicable taxes.
