The Shaw Joins Forces with the Design Exchange to celebrate the life of Diana, Princess of Wales

Edited by Madelyn Miller

On Saturday, February 21, the Shaw Festival joins forces with the Design Exchange to present a special viewing of the award-winning exhibition Diana, A Celebration. This event, which benefits The Shaw, includes a tour of the exhibition and a private afternoon tea with Shaw Festival Design Director William Schmuck and Senior Costume Cutter Rita Brown. The exhibition is on display at the Design Exchange, Canada’s design museum, located at 234 Bay Street (south of King) in downtown Toronto.

This remarkable exhibition celebrates the life and work of Diana, Princess of Wales and comes from the Althorp Estate in England, the ancestral home of the Spencer family. On display are authentic memorabilia and film footage from Diana's childhood and her adult life, original jewels, artifacts, paintings, and a collection of 28 dresses from her public engagements including her royal wedding gown.

The Shaw Festival’s designer William Schmuck and costumier Rita Brown will be available at the exhibit to discuss the design of Diana’s clothing, jewelry and accessories. Mr. Schmuck joined the Shaw Festival as Design Director in 1996. As well as designing sets and costumes for productions at The Shaw for ten years, he has also designed for many other theatre and opera companies across North America. Rita Brown, who has an extensive background in costume history and design, has been a key member of The Shaw’s Wardrobe Department since 1964. She is also known for Papiers à la Mode, an exquisite collection of historical costumes made entirely of paper by Ms. Brown and Belgian artist-designer Isabelle de Borchgrave, which was exhibited at the Royal Ontario Museum in 2001.

Tickets for this special event are $99, which includes the exhibit, afternoon tea and a tax receipt for $60. To book, call the Shaw Festival Membership Office at (905) 468-2153 or 1-800-657-1106 ext 367. Timed viewings begin at 4 pm. When calling, ask about a special promotion now being offered to Shaw Festival supporters for the Mirvish production of Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, which features Shaw Ensemble members Michael Ball, Jim Mezon and Martha Henry. Running until February 22, the play has been hailed as one of the greatest dramas of the century.

The Fairmont Royal York is the official hotel of this event. Attendees will be offered a preferred rate of $139 (based on double occupancy) on February 20 and 21. Call 1-800-441-1414 to arrange hotel reservations.
